1. Thou shalt not log in as root.
Use “su” or “sux -” for administrative tasks.

2. Thou shalt NOT use a package manager.
Apt is your best friend. This is one of the main strengths of sidux (debian sid).

3. Thou shalt be a part of the community.
Freely give what you have received for free. Offer help and advice whenever you can.

4. Thou shalt read the TFBM (bluewater manual) and man pages.
Always read the documentation. The people who wrote the software tried to anticipate your questions, and provided answers before you asked.

5. Thou shalt use the available support system.
Switching to sidux (debian sid) can be tough. It can be frustrating, but there are a lot of people out there who want to help you. Let them.

6. Thou shalt search.
In most cases, your question or problem has already been addressed. Try to find the answers that are already out there before asking someone to provide a new one.

7. Thou shalt explore.
sidux opens a whole new world of options and possibilities. Try everything you can.

8. Thou shalt use the command line.
Especially when it comes to configuration, get to know the command line. In many cases, the command line is the only way to use some of the more advanced features.

9. Thou shalt not try to recreate Windows.
sidux is not meant to be a clone of Windows. It’s different. Embrace and appreciate the differences.

10. Thou shalt not give up.
We all tried several distributions before we found one we liked. We still try other distros from time to time. We also try several different programs to serve one purpose before settling on what we use now i.e. (amarok, xmms, beep, exaile for music - azureus, ktorrent, deluge for bittorrents, etc ... ). If you don’t like the defaults, remember that you can change almost everything to suit you.

Yes, there are many copies of this "old" thing,, names, distros have been changed, some stayed the same, same as "linux is not windows" (that has changed over the years also)

So, if we stick to biblical and historical (as purported by some) associations here, and following what Piper wrote, would then M$crosoft be viewed as The Inquisition requiring others to pay for the their papal bull? (To a historian, that pun would cause them to roll on the floor in a great ball of laughter...and quite the opposite for the rest of us.) Laughing

Perhaps :

I apt am your package manager alone; you shall have no package manger above me

This may be old, but it's the first time I have seen it, and God is it so true. (pun intended)

I like #11, so I vote that #7 be dropped since explore and search can be pretty much the same thing. #6 could be amended to include it anyway.

Rules don't contradict freedom. Of course, you are completly free to break all that rules. But you should be aware what you are doing(otherwise you might not only break the rule, but also your system)

btw. the thread title is New sidux Users 10 Commandments
