I just started using sidux, but am a long time debian user. I encourage many people to try Linux, but can't currently recommend sidux to newbies. It would be great if there was a "default install" button that automatically handled things like partitioning, which is very easy for converts from other distro's, but impossible for first time Linux users.
Could we have a "Newbie default install button"?

Unlikely, there aren't many options you have to fill in for the installer - but user credentials and partitioning are that part which is hard to omit.
What we definately will not accept, is an auto-partitioning mode that either nukes as many partitions as it deems necessary or simply tries to shrink existing windows partitions. If you're looking for that, you will be disappointed; in the end, the admin has to decide how much space should be assigned to sidux and there is nothing that could replace those conscious decisions. |

I personally think that that would be dangerous to most users, even the newbies, because it is impossible to know what the person really wants.

We might want to look at how MEPIS does this, perhaps it's only fully-automatic in "use entire drive" mode, I'm not sure.

| LanceHaverkamp, it's important to realize that each distro meets some needs, and sometimes trying to do what another distro does is simply not a good idea. So if mepis is what is wanted, re one click install ease, perhaps mepis is what should be installed. There is nothing wrong with different distros meeting different requirements and user needs, nothing at all, but if one tries to meet them all, it's almost certainly going to come at a cost, and that cost is compromise. |

i understand the request. partitioning yourself is dangerous for a newbie, and/or its puts him off. but alas there is no way to solve this. i suppose a little googling with autopartdistroos will clear this up.
you have to be in control.
i am against an easy button. there is support here when they want help: forum or irc. |

I have always been more worried about using any automatic partitioning option.
Even as I complete noob I always went for the advanced options so I new exactly what was going to happen.
More than ever now, I think most linux installers, including partitioners are pretty easy to use.
And my first ever partitioning experience was using fdisk on a text mode gentoo installation, now THAT was scary. |

Personally, I think people asking for the "Easy Button" actually deserve one. I really love the design Staples did for it, just a fat red bug sitting there and saying: "Push Me!".
Implemented in sidux, it would ask just one single question:
"Welcome to the final solution to all computer problems you ever had - the sidux easy button(tm)! If you can say YES to the following you are ready for the ultimate sidux experience:
Do you agree that sidux will wipe ALL stuff you had on this machine now, with no recovery possible at all afterwards, and do you agree that sidux will overtake all hard disks and set up a default system for you, where your username will be USERNAME and your password will be PASSWORD, and where advanced admin functions can be accessed with the username ROOT and the password PASSWORD?
YES? Are you sure? Well, that's what we expected - simply press the sidux easy button(tm) NOW."

The problem is when you dual boot. The problem is bigger because you already have Window$ installed. Whoever has used automatic partitioning in Ubuntu has wiped out quite a few things.
If you want to use Linux with dual boot, you have to know about partitioning. And the best way is to do it manually. If you can not understand partitioning, how will you maintain (run) sidux ? |

Not bad...for the easy button mode, that warning and disclaimer make sense. When pressed, a dialog should come up saying "Are you SURE you want to do this. ALL data will be destroyed (Yes/No)"
Now how will we handle the case where Windows is installed? Autodetect the Windows partitions and note them? |
