Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 5520 laptop with the following specs:
Amd 64x2 1.9ghz
2 gb ram
nforce chipset (model number unknown)
Nvidia sound (uses alsa fine)
160 gb HD
DVD-RW
Nvidia Geforce 7000m graphics card
My problem is that in order to load the live cd for Eros, I have to do it from failsafe mode. That loads Ok but when it comes to installing to the hard drive the installer cant find the hard drive.
Currently I'm forced to have to use Kubuntu 8.04 Alpha4 on this machine and that makes me want to beat my face into a wall .
Any help would be greatly appriciated. I've used sidux on my home machine since Gaia's release and feel lost not being able to use sidux on my laptop. TIA |

Nice looking laptop. I agree with hathe. In particular, I think that irqpoll will help.
Doing a quick google search, it seems that people are having more luck with some kernels and less so with others. You may want to try several kernel versions -> use smxi -K and in the kernel install menu, you can choose one. |

Trying to boot in to sidux using the live cd doesn't load X. That leads me to believe maybe part of the problem is related to the the graphics card.
Booting using the Failsafe mode of the live cd loads well, but when I try to use the installer, it cant find the drive. Gparted wont even bring the drives partitions up. I apologize, I'm away from my laptop at the moment and my problem description is a bit sketchy. I'll have more solid info later. Thanks again. |

I have had the same problem on 3 different laptops now and "nv" never works across any distro I have tried.
I always boot live and at the command prompt "su" then change to /etc/X11
Next vim xorg.conf and change the line "nv" to "vesa"
save it then startx, install, then use smxi to install Nvidia. |

| What about the issue of not finding the hard drive as the original poster reports? Does that laptop use some oddball chipset for PATA/SATA? |

| Great to hear, Forge. Have you tried the installer or gparted again to see if it finds your hard drive this time? |

Yes on both counts. The installer automaticly found the drive and opening gparted showed the drive partitions as it should. Thanks once again. sidux runs like a champ on my laptop the only issue is the special buttons on the keyboard, but those i can live without. |

| Yes. Would you like that using the xmodule=vesa cheat code or from failsafe mode? |
