Post subject: kdm freeze at login  PostPosted: Jan 10, 2008 - 01:58 PM

Hi,
first at all, sorry for my English (I'm Italian).
Today, I've got sidux up & running; in the past I had some troubles:
- Tartaros did non use TouchPad, only with external mouse; and this was not fixed from updates and workarounds;
- Gaia CD did not boot at all.
This morning I've _installed_ Eros (solving TouchPad problem), but after a DU running smxi I've got only a mouse cursor on a black screen at login. Cursor moves, neither right nor left buttons do nothing. I've tried to insert login and password to unlock; Entering Ctrl Alt F# or Ctrl Alt BkSp did not work, and the same for SISRQ Keys.
I've installed latest kernel, rebooted and it worked; launched (init 3) smxi and made _only_ a DU, rebooted, and I get the error.
I must do a "brutal" reboot, and I can log in init 3; I've tried to find errors in Xorg.0.log and in kdm.log (none), then reinstalled xorg, changed xorg.conf with CD's one (but they was the same), then purged/reinstalled kdm... no luck.

You could try to disable kdm for further tests by editing /etc/X11/default-display-manager. Just append something (e.g. "off") to the kdm command. Now kdm does not start up anymore.

If you start X by using "startx" after logging in into a simple shell, does X work?

You might need to create a new file in your home directory to start KDE. Create ".xinitrc" and write one line into it "exec startkde".

Another possibility: try to install and use "gdm" instead of kdm to see it this works.

Hi,
I've add "off" as you've suggested.
If I run "startx" in a shell, I get mouse cursor (the classic arrow) on black screen, the same I get previously at boot; btw, keyboard is also not respondig to Ctrl Alt F# or Ctrl Alt BkSp.
The same after creating .xinitrc file.
I tink X is running with some problems, that made it unable to run kdm.
Peeking in my /home, this is my xsessions-errors.

This looks more like an xorg-configuration problem, I think.

You could try to use another window manager than KDE to be sure it is not KDE. (e.g. install icewm and start "exec icewm-session" (IIRC)).

These messages do occur here, too. They do not seem to be the problem

Well, I am not using kpowersave, so I do not have this kind of messages. But I wonder why the dbus service cannot be found? But as I guess this should not be the problem.

The following messages seem to come from running applications and should not have someting to do with your problem. (The !icon.isEmpty() is reported here, too.)

This following kind of X Errors might indicate a problem. Do you have some wacom drivers set up in your xorg.conf? Perhaps you could try to comment them out to check if they cause the problems.

Is xorg installed completely? (apt-get install xorg) Perhaps with all drivers xserver-xorg-input-all and xserver-xorg-video-all?

Which graphics card do you have? (use "lspci" to find out)

Is the correct driver configured in the xorg.conf? You could paste the xorg.conf here? Perhaps someone who is reading here does see a problem then?

I am not sure how to reconfigure the xorg.conf in sidux. The debian way via "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" did not work here when I had tried it. The xorg.conf was not be rewritten and an error because of missing debian-installer files did occur. But it might be an idea to completely reconfigure xorg.

Did you reinstall your graphics video driver after the new kernel and dist-upgrade? That's not clear. If you didn't, x won't start if you are using proprietary nvidia or ati drivers.

Hi,
- I've InputDevice section, in xorg, driver "kbd", so keyboard should work, some way; I've noticed SysRQ keys do work, but they need a lot of time;
- I've tried gdm DE, same result: only mouse arrow on black screen and no login window;
- no wacom in xorg;
- reinstalled xorg, no changes;
- tried to copy xorg.conf from CD Live, but they was identical; I'm writing from Live CD, it works; and, PC works after install, until upgrading system via xmsi;
- reinstalled video drivers, even if they was the free "radeon" and in others distro was not needed reinstall them after kernel upgrades.
