Hi all

After performing a few installs (and re-installs) of sidux i though of a better way to restore all of the software that I use and at the same time make the whole process automated.

I made a directory in the users home folder called system
Then i made a directory called cache within the system folder and copied the /var/apt/cache directory.
I also made a directory called extra software within the system folder and any .deb files get saved here.

once this was done i then made the attached script.

running as root user (in a shell) this script will perform the following :-

1. get the latest smxi script
2. copy back the /var/cache/apt/archives
3. get the latest DVB firmware and extract it into /lib/firmware and /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware
4. install software or remove software (saves having to type out alot of shell scripting)
5. configure samba (if there is a backed up smb.conf, copy it back) and then restart samba

I know that this script is nothing ground breaking but this saves me so much work now i can set up a system very quickly.
I can now copy the system folder back to the users pc and run from a shell (as root user) and set up my sidux machine with all of the extra software.

what do you think good / bad ?

I hope it helps.

well its not so much re-install for me but this year i have had bad luck with both my desktop machine packing up totally and a laptop giving up the ghost

so after rebuilding my replacement desktop I made this script.

also i did change the main harddrive for a bigger harddrive needing a reinstall

hence the script.

also my better half now has sidux and the script got her machine up and running alot quicker.

just thought this sort of script could help other people out as well. Smile
