hi!
sidux-04.5 christmas release came in a combined iso file for both i686 and amd64... the iso size is 1430MB and of course to big for a CD... a DVD needs to be burned, if that iso shall hit an optical disk
my question is: will all sidux releases now will be combined?
(especially because i don't have a dvd burner... that question is bothering me)
greetings

| I don't think it will, and I hope it won't. |

kde-lite will be a cd still, kde-full probably will not fit on a cd without cutting it down even more.

| It has always been ~ 400 - 500 M. The base system tends to only get larger over time, though. |

Pretty soon the lite version of an iso won't even fit a CD, then I guess CDs will go the way of floppies.
Can you believe I still sell floppies in my cybercafe. It's getting hard to find outlets to sell me new blank floppies locally. |

i had to install sidux on a laptop this weekend...
i've used my older gaia live-cd and booted the new xmas full-iso using the "fromiso" cheatcode. towo gave me the important hint to use grub in text mode... there i managed to adjust the parameters to fit my situation: everyting worked, installation needed only 5 minutes. |

You'd probably need a Blu-Ray disc to hold all the stuff, someday |

Hi Guys. I still think that there needs to be a seperate ISO of the I686 version and 64 bit version that will fit on a CD. There are too many people out there that do not have a DVD burner. I for one don't care to buy and install a DVD writer, and buy DVD disks just to be able to install sidux from. I have no other use for a DVD burner, as I don't watch DVDs on my computer...I have a dvd player and TV for that. As for blue-ray, Sony can keep it...thats the most polite comment I have...the rest of my comments on Sony, and blue-ray are unprintable in polite company!
As for the lite version, there are too many important programs missing for me to download via a dial-up connection. Dial-up is my only option here, as both cable internet and DSL are vastly overpriced in this area. Its bad enough that I had to download about 80 MB of programs at minimum for sidux 2007-03, and 2007-04 was missing Gimp.
If this trend continues, I guess I will have to start looking at other distros. As much as I like sidux, its bad enough that XMMS and Pidgin are not included for no good reason, and the inferior Amarok and Kopete are included.
I have been using sidux since it became available, but it has been going in a wrong direction for a while now.

| What's the difficulty in just downloading and installing the lite CD, and then apt-get ing the additional programs you feel it's missing? |

we cant stop stuff from growing, and that will get worse with kde4, so no chance really for kde-full on CD.
and xmms is gone from sid, its based on gtk1, dead as dead can be.

So you proved yourself the impossibility of an full-featured CD version in the future! Both 2007-03 and 2007-04 were 700MB isos, but as you said that was not enough!
So why complaining if you saw with your own eyes that it would be inevitable??

There is no need to burn. For example, there is also the possibillity to boot from a USB key

No. The direction never has changed. |

Pretty soon your only choice will be distro's that don't use kde at all, or ones like sidux that have a lighter option, (mandriva, saybayon to name a few does this as well) and a dvd option. As said above, kde is getting big, with kde4 around the corner it is bigger, atleast with the "lite" version of sidux you can pretty much apt-get what you want. You being in the Chicago area you can always ask here for someone to mail you a dvd (I am sure many would be glad to help) or you can buy one from the shop. The thing with no dvd is easy to get around >> fromiso << also much faster, and installs faster. Sorry to see you leave if you do, but, you will find this problem not with just sidux, but any distro that uses kde. |

What we can squeeze into 703 MB cannot reasonably be called "full", our kde-full now is about ~750 MB for i686 and ~780 MB for amd64, if you look at both architectures separately; with a tendency of growing ~40 MB in 3 months (and the transition period between kde3 and kde4 will be much worse, as selected libraries and programs for both will be needed over that time).
kde-lite on the other hand is the perfect match for your (and those of many others, including myself) needs, yes it is lighter - but fits perfectly onto a CD for each architecture (and there are definately no plans to abandon these for the forseeable future), even installing on a 512 MB USB stick remains an option. |

Thanks slh for that feedback.
Lite is what I like (though it is too heavy for me! LOL) |
