I just finnest an upgrade from kanotix to sidux with du-fixes-h2 script.
All went fine and now errors, but when I want to login into kde as user, the system hangs after the second kde-login-icon ( initialising system services)
blinks.
I can login as root to kde just fine.
What can be the problem?
I upgraded from kanotix 2005-4 with 2.6.17-slh kernel. |

when was the last time you did a dist-upgrade? You can't safely wait much more than 6 months at the very most, and that's the outside maximum time, and even that's not safe at all, to upgrade your system when you're running sid. Recommended is one time per week, 2 times per month is ok, 1 time is still fairly safe, but when you get to longer times, you are taking a bigger and bigger chance with your system.
You may have have to reinstall kdebase-data and kdebase, it's hard to say. |

Ican login to kde now but it takes 12 to 14 minutes! for kde to load .
Is the same for user as for root.
sidux startsup normal whitout errors till login screen.
I already did kdebase-data reinstall , but that didn't help.
Also tried other nvidia driver , but still same.
ps is there a way to grep console output when X is not running and then make a file from it to post this in the forum? |

I agree 100%, kanotix is kinda old now, have no idea how much longer it can be supported, even with the script. |

jackren,
it's a font thing. There are solutions either here in the sidux forum or over at kanotix or archive.kanotix.com. The problem is, I definitely solved that problem on one box, but it was months ago, and I do not remember what it was, just sth with fonts. The fix was easy, btw.

| Try this in init 3:
Code:
apt-get install --reinstall -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confnew fontconfig fontconfig-config

Tried your suggestion but it didn't help, kde still takes foreever to load.
Fonts do look better now thow, so thanks anyway.
I do think it has to do with fonts or Xorg config .
Should I post some log files?
ps piper suggested to just install the sidux iso, but even If wanted I couldn't cause the sidux iso hangs everytime when booting. |

I would seriously take a good look at your system itself (hardware) as KDE should not take 15 minutes to load even with a AMD 350mhz it is quite snappy, sidux should not hang at all |

My system has run fine with kanotix for years, and also with freespire which I have installed on a spare partition runs fine.
I have a P4 2.4 Ghz system.
I tried to burn several sidux images but they all fail to boor completly, I first thought my burner
wasn't ok , but that would be the first time then. |

Please list your system specs
Did you burn the iso in DAO at 8x or less and not use cheap media ? |

Well normal system specs will do
motherboard, cpu, memory, video card, burner (cd or dvd or combo, asus has many), homebuild or store bought, file system (ext3 or reiserfs) and how big of a partition, what kernel are you using and when was the last time you did a d-u ?
I think I covered the basics |

| Just post the output of infobash or, even better,
Code:
infobash -v3
So you get some of the most important specs ready to post. |

jackren,
sorry that it did not work. h2's script usually is genious, but upgrading from Kanotix 2005-04 is a bumpy ride by now: xorg upgraded from 6.x to 7.x. Your symtoms sounded like the fontconfig problems there were in SID four months ago, and I checked back in the Kanotix forum, but I am afraid nobody is able to help you, because even if people are running on etch, that transistion is far beyond us.
That's the "downside" not using stable Debian, but if you are going for unstable (or testing), leaving a box for a year or more and then upgrading causes troubles most of the people cannot recall.
Sorry for that, because I love my installations as well, and usually do not reinstall, but sometimes you are very on your own, esp. when you are running things nobody else does (anymore),
