kk we all know about aptitude, synaptic, adept and such cause it is widely published in the forums AND in the manual. apt-get being the preferred method of du's and install/removals. I have heard though that apt-get is depricated? However I don't seem to find anything in any of Debians materials or in google searches. Any truth to this rumour and if so true what is going to be the new method of administration?
There seems to be a discrepancy though in localepurge being suggested on various posts in the forums -- by devs even -- and in irc. I did do a little googling and found where localepurge has caused some problems even in Debian stable, so no harm no foul, its uninstalled now on my box and won't be suggesting it to others either.
I set up my locales using dpkg-reconfigure locales and all happy now.
It would be nice though to document this and other things that are considered no-nos that could be common usage by ppl coming from Debian stable. I used it for years.. didn't know there was a problem. Not only what scripts and proggies but the whys behind them would be appreciated. Along with suggested things to do instead
After we get our list a sticky would be nice along with sidux-manual updates. |

| using dpkg with the --force-overwrite option to force a package to overwrite a file just to force a package to install. This can be dangerous if the file being overwritten is a library. This no-no can potentially break things as for one thing the package that overwritten a file now becomes the owner of the file and subsequent upgrades of the package that once owned the file will now break too. |

| Hey cool list there craig... first time i've seen something about not using localepurge... all I want is a clear documented list that is EASILY found and mentioned in a few places. If this is so important shouldn't be hid away by only few in irc or another language nobody can read. |

| Well, that sucks. I have localpurge in all my installs So you're saying that "dpkg-reconfigure locales" will do the same than localpurge, except show me info ala geico(tm) of how disk space I've saved? |

No, it definitely does not the same. localepurge is a very invasive script removing parts of other packages without properly working together with the apt package database. This will eventually break the consistancy of this vital database. While dkg-reconfigure-locales might not perfectly remove all unused language files, it is well integrated into apt and does no harm. Please keep in mind that the difference in saved disk space is minimal. If your system depends on a couple of Mb free space you should seriously consider a hardware upgrade, as you will continiously run into trouble.
Greetings,
Chris |
