...icewm is very light and easy to use desktop (standard wm on the Asus eee-Notebook) and has special nice functions in the toolbar (over the file prefenrences configurable).
Another light and nice Desktop is matchbox.
For all light wm-s it is possible to use the tool idesk for putting icons on the desktop (also roxfiler is possible).
