Here is the "currently known" guide of all IRC channels. As I find more, I will update this post. I will attempt to make this post a "diffinitive" guide to all known "sidux related" chat rooms.

This guide should be able to assist people in finding a room to chat in, or to find a chat room they didn't even know existed. All the chat rooms are listed by channel name, and a short description, and if they are intended on specific discussions ( please respect the rooms topic, and purpose ).

Please, feel free to visit, converse, hang out, and participate... Many people frequent both the forums, as well as the IRC ( Internet Relay Chat ) rooms

Enjoy Very Happy

Channels found on: irc.oftc.net -=- port 6667

* * * sidux Related Support, and Specific Room Topics * * *
==============================================

#sidux - Main sidux related support channel - dual speaking ( DE and EN ) -=- If you would like to contribute to sidux in any way, this is a perfect room to make your willingness noted Smile

#sidux-it - Italiano sidux related support channel - Italian speaking

#sidux-nl - The Dutch speaking sidux community, or for those wanting to learn Dutch

#sidux-academy - sidux Coding channel ... for all discussions about the creation and coordination of code/programming for sidux

#sidux-docs - This is the work channel for sidux documentation - only for contributors

#sidux-art - sidux Artists channel ... for all discussions about the creation and coordination of art for sidux

#sidux-cf - Basically dealing with "compiz fusion" related, and/or sidux related, support. This IRC room is dual speaking (EN/DE)

* * * sidux/Non-sidux "Off-Topic" Rooms * * *
==============================================

#bash - "technically" not affiliated with "sidux", but, is run by many who are running sidux - The channel is directed at bash scripting, commands, etc... Technical questions on coding, and trouble-shooting of scripts within bash

#linux-smokers-club - "technically" not affiliated with "sidux", but, is run by many who are running sidux - I think the intent is to have a "casual" channel there

#sidux-offtopic - sidux "off-topic" chat

* * * sidux Kick-Back and Relax Chat Rooms * * *
==============================================

#sidux-pub - sidux "off-topic" chat

#sidux-stammtisch - The "pub" for the German speaking community - beer, jokes, snacks ... and no linux

==============================================

There is also #sidux-pub for offtopic stuff - it's a bit lonely there so perhaps everyone is next door in the smokers club or in offtopic!

Why do we need so many chat rooms? It just makes each room more sparse. Besides, I still talk off topic in the main room =D. Well, until etorix uses his mighty admin powers.

First, I agree with Piper, choice is a big factor...

Also, consider the following: #sidux is the main room, it "focuses" on everything going on in sidux. If, by chance, you want a little more "focus" on something "within" sidux, you either wait around for someone, or, start a room that is more "specific" for a subject. Case in point, #sidux-beryl, the room was created in hopes that "more focused chat" can be found in that room, on that subject.

As an example, you go to a General Practice Doctor, for most of your doctor visits, but, if you want more specific details, you can go to your "ears, nose, and throat", or, in the case of surgery, you dont want your General Practice Doctor doing anything that requires brain surgery, right?

By having a more "detailed" chat room, you get more expert information, and chat, about what you are looking for, hopefully. In the #sidux-beryl chat room, we have shame and zulu9 to assist on beryl related chats, information on what beryl is doing, fixes, installs, etc... You might get information from #sidux, but, might not get as detailed as in a room "designed" for it.

As for the "off-topic" chat rooms, they are different, run by different people, and, can have a "theme" to them... #linux-smokers-club is a chat room with a theme, or "flavor" of a smoking environment, with facts, topics, and, in many cases, a open, and acceptable, attituide, towards someone who chooses to smoke. Most of the descriptions for the chat rooms, are provided as "themes", or topic discussions, for the room. This would be the same for almost any "night club" or "hang out" in real life.

I guess I should have just gone with Piper's answer, it would have been shorter, and generic, but, I do have a "vested interest" in one of the chat rooms mentioned above, and, felt a need, to have it. If anyone feels that they can do something "more", to include something, that, someone else may feel, is needed, they do, have a right, to do it. I think the room is great, has enormous potential, and has already, helped a lot of people. I cant say, I want to have it closed down, or, even to have it, INCLUDED into the main room, #sidux, because it is more specific and detailed. So, maybe it is all choice?

There is also another, important reason: #sidux is our main support channel, where absolute newcomers come in and ask for help. Some of them might even just have clicked by accident on the "sidux-irc" icon, just to see what it does Wink. So, in order to seriously help those beginners it is really a good idea to keep off-topics and special interest separated. This includes necessary work chat for devs, linguists, mods, artists and support people who depend on this type of communication in order to get real work done.
Greetings,
Chris

Everybody does chat a little in the #sidux channel. It isn't verboten, you just can't go overboard and support always comes first. A little chat is good, a totally quiet channel often scares newbies off as much as an overactive one I've found. If you want a serious discussion that's why we have the other rooms.
Which leads me to why I'm here: can you please add #sidux-art to the list Cuddles? You'll want a description I guess. Maybe something like. "sidux artists room ... for all discussions about the creation and coordination of art for sidux."
I have no idea about factoids. I'll have to look into that as we go on. I can think of a few things we could do in the future regarding that but it's a bit premature at this point. I might end up the only one in there for all I know. Wink
