After converting three users to sidux two days ago & a chat with RazberrieTart... I have a request from the three use to sidux team.
They ask for a three books -
Beginners
Intermediate
Advanced
Editions for sidux usage...
With the emphasis on book 1 (beginners)
. On howto install in different ways on to many devices.
. Howto run different desktops
. Configuring attached devices
. Using OpenOffice
. Configuing Email clients
. Creating personal certificates for use with email etc.
. Basic Securing the desktop
. LiveCD usage
. Interoperability with Dual Booting other OS's
Book two (intermediate)
. Basic Administration of the Desktop from the CLI
. Basic Scripting and scheduling tasks
. Using SSH for admin
. Configuring Subsystems ie Sound & X
.
Book Three (Advanced)
. Programmng with Shell's & other popular languages
. File & Disk Encryption
. Securing Network communications
. VM machine usage
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This is not an exhaustive listing but just a guide to what they have asked for ...
The reason for three books are, they'd be easy to carry on a train & not to heavy for their handbags or briefcases. As one book with all this stuff would be too heavy to walk around with on a bus/train.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
What are people's thought on this request...?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Attached is the conversation between me and RazberrieTart...

| sidux is Debian Sid so most of their requests are covered by already printed material such as Debian System, Debian Bible, Linux cookbook, A Guide to Linux Commands, Editors and Shell Programming etc. Since Linux is constantly improving printed matter tends to be come dated quickly. Google for tutorials and print them off. Using Linux is also about being empowered to help yourself. The excellent sidux manual is the best source for sidux information and administration again some of what you want is already there. |

When it comes to the process of sitting down and CREATING documentation, in general there is no 'they' who will do that. There is only 'you'.
So you will find that if you want to create 1, 2, or 3 books, and if there is interest from others, then you may end up being the person who creates them. Who else would do it?
Re the levels, I have rarely seen any need for anything other than 2, beginner and intermediate/advanced. Intermediate and Advanced are really more or less the same, it just depends on what the users know, for example an advanced gimp user might only be a beginner sys admin user.
Since, objectively, maintaining anything is hard and time consuming, there should be, if you actually decide to make this, which is a fine idea, in pdf format for example, only 1 book, which could for example be divided into chapters, each of which starts with beginner stuff, then moves on.
However, as noted, this stuff changes so fast, you'd soon find yourself maintaining the stuff pretty much non stop. Just ask Bluewater if you want to know how it is. |

Or using the tech approach, get an old pda with a reasonable screen and view read manuals as e-books or pdfs. Even some of the latest mobile phones have good enough screens for this. This way updates can be easily incorporated as and when required. Just a thought...

Thanks for the fine replies ...
I have been with one of my friend's, that I did the install and quickie overview on using sidux...
They said they could PDF alot of documents off the tldp & PDF Bluewater's doc's...
Though they would need some order what to read first get upto speed in general... She said a sidux for newbies in plain simple non geek language could work easily..
Though now I see, that there are plenty mentioned books from the Debian variety, for them to use & learn from...
Thx for the information... I see them all this weekend, after spending alot of the last few days playing with sidux |

From the bluewater's manual, I think the page about Terminal/Console/Konsol is essential
for read first or early.
Also there are useful links for learning basic commands for Linux, (also shell programing) |

Perhaps there might get an order in the sidux manual to give beginners pointers of where to start.
IT isn't a bad idea, and perhaps for the sidux foundation, it might be something to sell in a printed format, at request?
Perhaps a subscription of newly updates through PDF files? |
