I support that proposal - and additionally vote for removing the news from the start page (the block with last news on the left should remain). Instead we should extend and opticially improve the few lines for newcomers we provide now there. All the pages linked from there would need some love, too. I am willing to implement if others provide the meat (text!).
Greetings,

| Nice layout, xadras...definitely would help clean up the site navigation. Even a "Site Map" link would be useful |

I also think the the home page needs a masthead that extends across. The logo is lost in the corner. The page could also have three columns instead of two, allowing for more information and better categorizing, like on PCLinuxOS or this as an example...

| nice idea rodneyck, also the tags thing should be implemented. Also, I love xadras' idea of the download form. |

I hate 3 colums - that's yesterday's ugly portal style. Based on existing ideas from several people, I propose the following for the main entry page (index.html):
top area, one column in 100% width, 500px high
contains the logo + release seasoned art, the why?, the what?, the warm welcome, several important links (to downloads, roadmap, screenshots, etc.) - all that with nice formatted easy to read & understable text.
middle area, five colums, together 100% width, 250px high
the five colums have different colors, each serving a "target":
target News - contains the last 5 important news headlines and links to the News overview and the RSS feeds
target Help - links to Manuals, Forums, Chat & Wiki (and to commercial support offers, eventually)
target Commute - links to the e.V., the Reviews, the Press area, the Shoppe, the User Gallery and Donations
target Teams - links into the Trac/SVN for core development, manual, art, edu, extras, website & XFCE
target Gear - provides a search box, link to extended search, to the user profile/settings, language selection
bottom area, one column in 100% width, 18px high
the legal stuff we already have there
For all other pages I would love to stick with the slim and fast 2 column 100% width design we already use. Several of those need some love: The download page should follow xadras' idea with mirror selection and include hints and links (manual condensed). The Review area should look better and actively offer the addition of articles found. The Donations area should show the latest 10/20 donations, and give more instructions about wire, tax deductable receipts, etc. The Press area needs to be created with ready to download press releases, official graphics & logos and contacts to people willing to overtake this burden.
What do you think?
Greetings,
Chris |

@slam
that sounds so good, and the fact that it has "release seasoned art" blends well with the fluidity of the sid_pool. Go for it! |
