Hello! (I want to preface this by saying the kernel system in sidux is excellent--the ability to pull in and patch the vanilla source automatically is very nice!)
I'm having some trouble with the new 2.6.23.1 kernel. When I boot sidux on my laptop with the default 2.6.22.3-rc1-slh-smp-2 kernel, I get battery life than on the newer kernel, despite the addition of the HPET timer patches by slh.
When I run PowerTOP with the old kernel, I get excellent power usage statistics--I stay in C4 ~75% of the time and use about 9W of power. However, it complains that a bunch of kernel changes would improve battery life. (In particular: unsetting CONFIG_IRQ_BALANCE, setting CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND, setting CONFIG_TIMER_STATS, adding HPET timer patches.)
Thus, I upgraded to the new 2.6.23.1-slh-smp-18 kernel, which has the HPET patches, and changed the other three settings. When I boot off my new kernel, PowerTOP stops recommending all those things--but I am always stuck in C0 100% of the time and my power usage jumps to 10.5W.
Does anyone have any advice why the newer kernel is harming my efficiency? |

Thanks for the advice! The new experimental kernel brings my power usage down to 8.8W without a recompile with the other power-saving options enabled.
EDIT: I also see that hpet is now disabled. I wonder if that was causing the problems. |

For those who are curious, the power saving keeps coming with newer kernels. If you are in need of battery life, I highly recommend compiling from source.
I just compiled 2.6.24-rc2-git2 with powertop patches, hpet, usbcore, timer stats, group scheduler, cfq (the first four things are not in default slh kernels) and I now idle at 7.8W, with 99.9% of the time in C4. |
