Hello,
I just installed Gaia on my new Dell Vostro 1500. It works but I have trouble with WIFI the module is ipw3945. I loaded these modules with the cable which I unpluged and the rebooted. I rerun (after complete du and kernel change with the script) the script to install the ipw3945 module.
the message of the script was : I'm sorry, but the script could not locate that module....
the remote script sm-versions could not be accessed (of course I am offline and want to install the WIFI module).
What must I do ? How can I access this sm-versions script?
thanks for help

Thanks, but it does not work!
Vista is installed also and shows the vostro uses Intel pro 3945ABG WIFI card.
Is it maybe not yet supported ?

...it is supported and judging from recent feedback it also works, current kernels preferred.

I have that card and it does work ( led won't turn on, off course, but it connects ). You need to follow what sprinter1's link says for ipw3945, even the modprobe lines. If you don't have success, post whatever error you got in here for more support or go to IRC.

Probably what you need to do first is install a new kernel and dist-upgrade with smxi with your wired cable, make sure the iwl3945 module is working, set up the wireless card, and make sure it connects

LED support is currently under development upstream, but those have no influence on functionality at all.

I have had similar issues with my Dell XPS 1210 (maybe it's something to do with Dell and their ipw3945) and found that I had to run "iwlist wlan0 scanning" to get it to come to life so it would associate with my access point. After running that command (and seeing my network) I can just do "/etc/init.d networking restart" to bring things up to life properly.

Unfortunately I was doing this every time I rebooted (never even tried to add any script to try and do it automatically). Interestingly the problem dissappeared with the last test build I did so perhaps a bug has been fixed in the latest kernel or some other code.

Thank you for the trick.
I have to do :

iwlist wlan0 scanning
ifdown wlan0
ifup wlan0

then is works!
Wondering what is the cause?
Where might be the bug?

Thank you anyway

I tried the new kernel smp-16 ... it does not work!

The wifi card is recognized but I do not get any IP adress with dhcp.
even when I type frist iwlist wlan0 scanning and then ifdown ... if up wlan0.

So I installed smp-9 ( I had smp-8 before). I does not connect immediately, but as with kernel smp-8 I can connect after
iwlist wlan0 scanning
ifdown wlan0
ifup wlan0

Some mystery?

I can confirm the auto connect problems with iwl3945.
My troubleshooting shows this issue is only with WEP Encryption.
With WPA Encryption I have no probs anymore.

hello;
i use a dell inspiron 9400; iwp3945 it is not used anymore by me,

the LED it is not working; but KWiFiManager in botoom right is enough for wireless visual control; Fn+F2=on/off wireless;
when i play wrong with network config files, then i just type as root user:
ifdown -a #to shutdown all interfaces
ifup -a #to start all interfaces (inclusive wireless)

for power save I just tried as I read at http://www.lesswatts.org/tips/wireless.php
sid:/home/nick# echo 5 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/iwl3945/0000\:0c\:00.0/power_level
sid:/home/nick# cat /sys/bus/pci/drivers/iwl3945/0000\:0c\:00.0/power_level
5 (Timeout 25ms, Period 1000ms)
if something crash the wireless; because of cache of apt-get install is not cleaned, as sidux wiki said, just install again firmware+iwl3945, not ipw3945
i am a novice at linux, but as long as i have wire network integrated, wireless can be crash and repair at will;
