Ok. I installed the latest kernel in smxi, .23-slh-2 and completely lost network and internet connections. After trying a few things, netcardconfig is correct, nothing seemed to work.

Booting into the previous kernel I have, .22-9, have full working network/internet connections.

LadyCuddles also tried the same thing with the same results, the new kernel does not let us have network/internet connection.

Netcardconfig is correct, old kernels will boot, unplugging/replugging modem, rebooting, unplugging, replugging router, editing etc/network/interfaces, nothing gives connection. Also tried running ifconfig, running dhclient. Nothing.

x-un-i asked for the output from var/log/messages, dmesg, and lsmod.

WLAN?

Just realized some weird renaming on my Broadcom Wireless. Connected as eth1 till 2.6.23, now it renames itself to "wlan0_rename". No chance to get this beast running at the moment.

Maybe someone can help out.

You can check through
Code:
ifconfig
If a weird network device name appears, then it's that.

I give it a last try before falling back to 2.6.22.9.

Well, it is a showstopper for me at the moment, because I cannot identify where the renaming of the Broadcom interface comes from. No tweaking of interfaces works.
Code:
$ lspci
<snip>
02:03.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 03)
Brilliantly working interfaces with wpa-roaming till now:
Code:
cat /etc/network/interfaces
# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

# The loopback interface
# automatically added when upgrading
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
post-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 mtu 1500

allow-hotplug eth1
iface eth1 inet manual
  wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
iface home inet dhcp
iface stalk inet dhcp
Here ifconfig with 2.6.22.9:
Code:
# ifconfig
eth0      Protokoll:Ethernet  Hardware Adresse 00:C0:9F:3A:BE:7C
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:21 Basisadresse:0x8800

eth1      Protokoll:Ethernet  Hardware Adresse 00:90:4B:54:3B:E1
          inet Adresse:192.168.2.192  Bcast:192.168.2.255  Maske:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:576  Metric:1
          RX packets:1173 errors:0 dropped:7 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:908 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          Kollisionen:0 Sendewarteschlangenlänge:1000
          RX bytes:564353 (551.1 KiB)  TX bytes:72492 (70.7 KiB)
          Interrupt:10 Basisadresse:0xc000
<snip lo, vmnet1, vmnet8>
Booting into 2.6.23 does not have eth1 in ifconfig at all, but iwlist s reveals the weird namechange:
Code:
# iwlist s
lo        Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0      Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth1      Interface doesn't support scanning.

wlan0_rename  Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

vmnet1    Interface doesn't support scanning.

vmnet8    Interface doesn't support scanning.
I changed /etc/network/interfaces then to:
Code:
# cat interfaces
# /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)

# The loopback interface
# automatically added when upgrading
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
post-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 mtu 1500

allow-hotplug wlan0_rename
iface wlan0_rename inet manual
  wpa-roam /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
iface home inet dhcp
iface stalk inet dhcp
After some ifups, ifdowns, wpa_action wlan0_rename reload I really got the thing going, but on shutdown, wpa_action froze with a bug message on the terminal (sorry, did not write it down). I had to reboot by alt+prtscr+"RSEIUB". Bringing the kernel up, same story again: no wpa_action, no wireless connection.

So, that's really a showstopper, and at some stage at the weekend I might check if ipw2200 is behaving as eratically as this broadcom chip.

Back to 2.6.22.9 for now, there seems to be no major bug in it anyway.

Hubi, no wireless, all wired, and yes, we tried ifconfig... Some are running fine on it, some aren't. It's pretty odd for sure.

ipw2200 up and running with 2.6.23.1 on the vaio. No weird renaming. Too tired now to check this kernel on my HP to track the problem down, but the announcement does not mention any relation to a wireless/network problem:
