I just started using Linux- sidux Unstable and really enjoy it after dealig with Vista...
My one issue:
I bought a Toshiba Satellite A135 S4437 ealier this year while still in the states. For wifi it uses an Intel Pro 3945BG card. I was able to connect with no problems in the states using Windows Vista (bleh). I have since moved to the Middle East -- Amman, Jordan. Upon arrival I instantly tried to make use of the apartment's wireless and couldnt connect on Windows. I partitioned the hard drive and loaded sidux unstable and still show no signs of wifi. After hours upon hours of trying to find a fix I broke down and bought a modem wire for internet.
Went back and checked to see if I needed to update the drivers on Windows and after a check for updates I got back something saying everything is up to date.
I prefer the Linux system now over Windows and for the comfort of mobility would like to find a solution for my wifi.
Is there a chance the card is not supported in the ME? Possibly different frequencies...?
Would be grateful for any suggestions. |

I don't think so. Maybe they misconfigured their wireless network. Did you scan for networks and see it?
BTW: Welcome to sidux! |

Did you install the firmware package?
That is not part of the install cd. |

| You may need to check the wifi standards for your particular country as what Trash80 mentioned, different countries use different frequencies. |

<bump>
Thank you for the responses. I have spent a few days googling and wiki'ing trying to find out about wi-fi frequencies in different countries and not coming up with anything relevant. Anybody out there know if it is a different frequency issue can I go into the laptop and change it? Is this something I can fix? Thanks in advance |

Suppose you read this site about installing the firmware of your wireless chip (just scroll down):
http://sidux.com/Article290.html
After having set up sidux, what do the following say (last two commands need to be done as root):
Code:
lspci
ifconfig
iwlist s
Please post the output, best by using a codebox.
Another question: is wireless through a router you can access through wire? Maybe you need to set sth. there. Access means: to the router, not necessarily to the internet.

Hello Hubi,
Here is the output you requested. Currently I am connected to the router thru a wire. Again...thanks ahead of time.
updating the firmware this came up:
Code:
apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
firmware-iwlwifi is already the newest version.

lynnAM07,
there seems to be no wireless activated at all, though Linux can see it in lspci.
Stupid question: is the hadware switch on? I have one on my Toshiba Satellite P100 on the front panel. And I always tend to forget to check those hardware thingies first.
If this is not the problem: I will be on my Toshiba at work tomorrow, and it has the same wireless chip as yours, iirc. I have never activated it, but this is the right time to try it out. So we can work on this one together.
What I would need, is your kernel, I am running 2.6.23.1-slh-smp-1. With kernels 2.6.22 or older some namings might be different, but I am not sure about that (the broadcom chip has changed, intel ipw2200 stayed the same).
Greetings

Hubi,
Sent me into a bit of a panic thinking I never turned the hardware switch on...That would have been typical of me.
Yes the switch has been on.
my kernel:
Linux siduxbox 2.6.21.3-slh-smp-4 #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon May 28 13:55:43 CEST 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
I truly appreciate the help...

According to Madwifi site:
Quote:
The Atheros chipsets can tune to a wide range of frequencies, part of them being outside the bands that are permitted for unlicensed use (ISM-bands). Non-ISM-frequencies are licensed by various regulatory agencies for different purposes, such as military or civil radar use, military communications, wireless local loop installations, and so on. Furthermore, there may be regulations on the allowed transmission power on different frequencies, and on conditions such as indoor or outdoor use.
The Atheros chipsets are capable of operating on frequencies outside those that are licensed, or legal to use without a license, and can vary the transmission power on these frequencies. So there must be some mechanism for enforcing the frequencies that are used. The limitations in regards to legal frequencies and transmission power change depending on the given region (such as Japan, UK, USA, etc), thus the HAL changes its behaviour depending on the 'regdomain' and country code.
At least the USA Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that any manufactured products have a mechanism for limiting transmission power and frequencies, and that these mechanisms are not easily modifiable by the consumer. If you are in a region that limits the number of frequencies, say, Japan, it is illegal to broadcast out of those assigned channels, even though the chip is capable of operating outside of the limited frequency band assigned by Japan.
Yes, this is not your wifi chipset, but the same law applies to Intel also.
The FCC fiercely protects radio frequency because of the military use of radio frequencies.
The best possible scenario is that you need to buy a PCMCIA or Express Card wifi adapter from the country you are currently needing wireless access.
This is the same for radios, TV's, power supply (50hz vs 60hz), etc. Did you buy a special power cord adapter for your laptop?
oh, from the mouth of Intel:
Quote:
Intel's wireless LAN's EEPROM, firmware,
microcode, and software driver are designed to carefully control
parameters that affect radio operation and to ensure electromagnetic
compliance (EMC). These parameters include, without limitation, RF
power, spectrum usage, channel scanning, and human exposure.
That quote is from Intel's Open Source firmware site:
http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/#requirements
which links to:
http://bughost.org/ipw3945/
which links to:
http://bughost.org/ipw3945/NOTICE
But it does appear there could be a chance that you could change the frequency by telling the laptop you are not in the US, but in (where ever you are now). (This is a possibility). The location maybe hardwired into the card.
It looks mostly as though this would require some reverse engineering and technical know how of wifi engineers.
I wish you luck in you endeavor. |

Lynn,
had a bit more workload today than expected, so I will get back to making wireless run on my Toshiba soon (before weekend I suppose).

Lynn,
just did the normal procedure to set up wireless. Specs here are:
Code:
# lspci
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02)
Then you need (suppose you did it):
Code:
apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi
Then
Code:
/etc/init.d/networking restart
or rebooting.
My 'iwlist s' gives (back to kernel 2.6.22.8 because of sound regressions on 2.6.23.*):
Code:
# iwlist s
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
wmaster0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
Next would be, setting up /etc/network/interface for useing wlan0.
EDIT:
Did a raw setup, and 'iwlist s' gives:
Code:
# iwlist s
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
wmaster0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
wlan0 No scan results
Which means: wlan0 is working and scanning, but no WLAN here ... there is no wireless accesspoint around here anyway, so the scanning is correct.
You should get to this point, even when frequencies are not supported.
Greetings
