Google told me that kernel 2.6.23 will include a driver for the rtl8186b wlan-chip. Since wlan doesn't run with the current sidux release i am curious about the upcomming version. Will it be delivered with kernel 2.6.23 and is rtl8186(b) driver included in this kernel? I'm really looking forward to use sidux on my new Notebook (like I do with my old desktop

SOLVED:
I had to remove the module r8169 first. Next try with ndiswrapper succeeded! |

ok, not sure whether it is possible to check it out via vmware. i haven't got a native sidux on my new laptop yet. need to repartition it. i installed the experimental kernel in a sidux-vm-machine and played around a bit with the vm network interfaces (dis/enabling) but i didn't have any success yet.
strange: i found some information on http://os-iso.de/sidux-2007-3-gaia-p-203.html. believing it, gaia already should support rtl8187. but i didn't succeed booting the live cd.
thanks,

ok, my feedback:
i installed your new experimental kernel (offline),
I deactivated encryption in my router interface. router runs on dhcp
lsmod | grep rtl =>

usbcore 137736 7 usb_storage,libusual,rtl8187,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd
----------------------------------------------------------------------
netcardconfig shows this device:

continuing netcardconfig ...
Setup wireless options? => OK
ESSID => my ssid
NWIS => nothing
Modus => Managed
Kanal => my channel
WPA => cancel
Verschlüsselungs-Key => empty => OK
zusätzliche Parameter für iwconfig, iwspy, iwpriv jeweils nix (sorry, there is only german output)
DHCP? yes
after a while ...
Interface aktiviert, beim Systemstart automatisch aktivieren? => OK
Exit => OK
Success => OK
But in fact i did not have any connection to lan & wan. and of course i could not ping my router.

than i tried to install some different windows drivers via ndiswrapper (after removing the module). but there wasn't any wlan-device when i started netcardconfig again. at this moment your kernel module is loaded again (see output from lsmod | grep rtl)
my router logs wlan-events. no event during all of my testing.
clueless,

Code:
ifconfig up wlan0
iwlist s
does that find your access point?
please post the contents of /etc/network/interfaces (be aware hat it might contain your wpa encryption passwprd).
please post the output of dmesg. |

things are getting worse: now i even fail to get a wifi connection using vista on the same machine - which definitely worked before. maybe there is an interrelation? i did reset my router but this didn't help.

| grrr, sorry should have been:
Code:
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwlist s
No misconfiguration/ bad driver survives a hard reset, worst case might be switching off the power (removing the akku) for 5 minutes. |

this part looks good, the chipset is properly detected and the driver loads, but

hints that the driver will most likely need further development to correctly drive your specific PHY...
I don't know device nor driver well enough to start further assumption regarding this, but expect this shortcomming to be fixed upstream in due time; ndiswrapper is probably your only option for now (you need to get XP drivers, ndiswrapper doesn't support ndis6/ vista drivers yet). |

so there is still hope
i'm looking forward.
and yes indeed: wifi started without any problem when i booted vista this morning.
right now i'm running my md96290 on sidux ethernet based - as i expected without any problems.
so thanks a lot for the efforts you made!

Hi,
I really prefer sidux over Windows Vista - sidux runs much faster and looks much nicer. However, I can not get the WLAN and ethernet to start working, meaning to establish a connection with the internet through my WLAN router.
I read in this thread that I have to remove the module of the r8169 to solve my issue.
I would be glad if some could provide a detailed step-by-step instruction (What to type in the console or what to click on in which application) for Newbies like me so that I can get the WLAN / Ethernet to work.
Thanks in advance,
Felix. |

I noticed that after removing the module r8169 i could get a connection with ndiswrapper. I'm not quite sure if this solution helps you. There could be lots of reasons. Anyway:
First find out which eth-module you use. Check the manual, google ....
- Login as root
lsmod | grep (name of module)
rmmod (name of module)
Download the (windows)driver for your wlan-card and check for *.inf-Files
Continue with
http://www.sidux.com/index.php?module=p ... apperHowTo
BTW: It worked with kernel 2.6.23.11-slh-smp-1 but I'm still trying with 2.6.24* without success.
Some minutes later ....
I had to recompile the ndiswrapper-module for the new kernel:
m-a a-i ndiswrapper
modprobe ndiswrapper ...
Now it also works with the new kernel. |

| what kind of wifi card you have in there. It´s a rtl8187, rtl8187L or rtl8187B? and if it´s rtl8187B what ID (8187, 8189 or 8197)? And how did you get it working (ndiswrapper or native driver), in which kernel and CPU arch? |

| i got a rtl8187b an i was successfull running it together with ndiswrapper. it is reported that the upcomming kernel 2.6.27 has got native support for rtl8187b. slh, maintainer for sidux-kernels, tried to create a hack for current 2.6.26 but i didn't manage to get my network running. strange: i can scan my wifi neighbourhood and i find some hotspots but i can't find mine. maybe it's because of wpa/ccmp. but even if i open my wifi (no encryption) i cannot find it by scanning. |
