Post subject: Different reported cpu speeds  PostPosted: Sep 21, 2007 - 05:25 PM

I installed 2.6.22.6-slh-smp-8 and noticed the CPU speed was only 1000.000MHz, I went back to the older kernel and as can be seen from info it is 2200.000MHz

Host/Kernel/OS "sid" running Linux 2.6.22.5-slh-smp-1 i686 [ sidux 2007-03.1 - Γαια - kde-full - (200708151444) ]
CPU Info AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512 KB cache flags( sse sse2 nx lm pni ) clocked at [ 2200.000 MHz ]
Videocard nVidia G70 [GeForce 7300 GT] X.Org 1.4.0 [ 1280x1024 @50hz ]
Network cards nVidia CK804 Ethernet Controller, at port: e800
Processes 88 | Uptime 3:22 | Memory 126.2/1011.5MB | HDD ATA SAMSUNG SP1614N,ATA SAMSUNG SP1614N Size 320GB (37%used) | GLX Renderer GeForce 7300 GT/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW! | GLX Version 2.1.1 NVIDIA 100.14.19 | Client Shell wrapper | Infobash v2.67

Is this just a reporting error or are they the actual speeds with each kernel, does it matter.

This may be differ from time to time depending on other processes running

My infobash shows 1000 MHz - it is a variable speed processor so only runs faster when it needs to. Is this the same with yours?

Check BIOS settings for "Cool'n'Quiet". If Cool'n'Quiet is enabled, the processor will throttle down whenever there's no load. This is a very useful feature because it reduces fan noise as well as power consumption.

Cool ,n,quiet is enabled, I knew the CPU speed was variable but I didn't realise the speed infobash reported was variable I thought it was just the max rated speed, live and learn, although both readings were taken with no applications running and within a few minutes of booting so I would have though would be similar.

CPU speed variation is done with very low latency, infobash spawns alot of commands to gather information. Combine these two properties, and you get a big fat bash script that sometimes triggers the cpu to change frequency when executed, dependning on all other environment variables etc etc.
