Dear members,
I was just givin' as in free a Dell Dimension E310 . It looks and works like brand new(runs pretty good for an old machine) . I installed sidux on it within the first 15 min.s (thank you, excuse me while I install). My question, This is my first Intel board and I am using the stock out of the box plus upgraded kernel (2.6.22-slh-smp-5) Question, Would I see a performance gain and is there a better kernel choice . The Bios surport hypertheading. If you all have any tips or tricks for this machines I would love to hear them.
P.S. Dear Moderators piper, h2, LadyCuddles, If you all feel that this question(s) is of no value to the forum please delete, so not to dirty up ours/yours forum, Thank you Mid_night Gypsy |

Hi gypsy
The latest stable kernel is kernel-2.6.22.6-slh-smp-5.zip (which can be installed manually or using smxi)
If you feel adventurous and feel like testing you can try kernel-2.6.23-rc6-git1-slh-smp-3 (which can also be installed manually or using smxi -K) Just remember to keep the old kernel (don't delete) just in case you have problems or can't boot for some reason, you can always revert back to the working one by selecting it at the grub boot screen
All kernels are found at http://sidux.com/files/kernel/
As far as performance gain I think you are just fine using what you have (thinking it is 2.6.22.6-slh-smp-5) |

piper,
Thanks for the reply. I guess my question was a little to vague as to witch kernel would be my best choice . I was referring to the Debian choices in synaptic the ones that say i686 and are prebuilt for the Pentium 3,4,pro,etc.But. I will take your advice and keep the kernel that I am using. Thanks, gypsy |
