Post subject: monitor & keyboard problem : intel 965q  PostPosted: Apr 24, 2008 - 06:43 PM

in short : my machine (Dell desktop, intel 965Q chip) hangs at boot-up, right at the end of the process, just as kdm should be started...instead of a graphical login, I get a blank screen, with a single "-" character (not flashing) at the top left..all keyboard input is also lost ; even pressing "alt" and "sysReq" at the same time, along with the sequence "r s e i u b" won't work, so I have to shut off manually using the power button

when did it happen? : first, after I upgraded "eros", using smxi, in late February (this was a major upgrade, some xorg components, but I did not upgrade the kernel) ; the problem has persisted with my "eros" installation ; then earlier this week I did a clean install of "nyx", and the same problem occurred, as soon as I tried to reboot after installing to the hard drive

so, I think that it's : some xorg component? I don't think it's the kernel, because my machine was working just fine under "eros" until I upgraded 2 months ago, and I did nothing to the kernel then

what works?
(1) I have Mandriva 2008.0 and MInt 4.0 on the machine, and they both work fine

(2) sometimes sidux will work if I boot in single-user mode, go to level 3, and then "startx" : sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't

(3) the sidux live DVDs (both "eros" and "nyx") work fine..kde loads right at boot-up...although the computer hangs (with no keyboard input) when I try to shut down from the live DVD

Most likely the intel Xorg driver is rooted on that particular hardware. Keep in mind sid usually gets a blleding edge xorg driver set, whereas "Mandriva 2008.0 and MInt 4.0" afaik will most likely ship a working driver that never updates.

You could try setting Driver to "vesa" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf or xmodule=vesa cheatcode for live boot.

First of all, thanks a lot, Kelmo, for the help.

(And my apologies for being so slow to act on the advice : it's my office machine that has the trouble, and I wasn't in my office until today.)

Replacing the "intel" driver with the "vesa" driver does indeed solve the problem, of the computer hanging when kdm starts at boot-up.

So it certainly appears to be the latest version of the intel driver which caused my problem.

2 further questions/issues, however :

(1) Should I be filing a bug report somewhere? With the xorg maintainers? Presumably these newest intel drivers will be working their way done into other distributions eventually...

(2) There is a hanging problem, which remains even with the vesa drivers .. the computer still hangs after I shut down. That is, if I log out, and click on "restart", then the computer does not restart, but hangs on shutdown, and there is still no keyboard input which works, necessitating manually shutting off with the computer's start button. The computer shuts down correctkly after I log out, if I click on "shut down" rather than "restart". This hanging also occurs with the live DVD (in xmodule=vesa mode as well), after I shutdown, renove the DVD, and press "enter".

Solved! -- at least the xorg problem ---

the newest version of xserver-xorg-video-intel in Debian experimental (2.3.0) solves the problem of hanging at x-server launch [it turns out, from the xorg bug reports, that this problem was specific to the 2.2.* version of the driver, and only with the 965q chip]

BUT..I still get a hard freeze when I try to log out and restart the computer
