Post subject: General laptop installation problems  PostPosted: Aug 21, 2007 - 07:57 AM

Apologies for asking a very general question but I'm not sure how to break it down into more manageable segments.

Hardware is;
Acer Aspire 5103
Dual AMD
1gb ram
Broadcom wireless

HP 930c printer
Logitech usb wireless mouse
Belkin Wireless Router
Canon Lide 60 scanner

sidux 2007-03 lite + selected programs (same issue with 02 too)

My installation works fine once running and it also boots fine when connected to my usb printer, mouse and router at boot. If the computer was a desktop, I would not have this concern but as it is a laptop, I'd like to get the following resolved.

1) If I boot the laptop without the printer and / or mouse connected, the boot sequence hangs at regular intervals and won't restart without me hitting the enter button ie: the os seems to be looking for the 'missing' items at boot and won't complete the boot without intervention.

2) The same applies to the wireless connection; start with the Wired lan - everything is fine; starting with wireless only results in slow boot requiring my intervention as above and with a 'mammoth' delay while the system tries to communicate with the 'missing' Wired Lan.

Both problems mean that it is inconvenient to use the laptop as intended ie: away from optional peripherals and on wireless connection. As I say, if it was a desktop, I probably would not have even noticed the issue.

I've tried to isolate the problem by installing sidux both while the usb devices are connected and again without them connected to see if that solved the issue but it did not. I also have the wired/wireless connection activated with auto hotplug.

I currently dual boot with XP which will boot up quickly (by which I mean normally) whether the peripherals are connected or not and whether I'm connected to wired or wireless.

I would expect sidux to do the same and as there seems to be no such problems with other peoples installations, I can only believe that it is down to something I have done or have not done.

Again, apologies for the generalised questions but I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Once its running, I find sidux very easy to work with and finally produced several pieces of work without using XP at all last month.

I am nearly there (although the file structure and where to find things is still a little hit and miss.. but its coming together slowly). If I can get my laptop to behave as intended, the picture will be complete and the learning process can continue.

Your (unknown) wireless configuration I can only assume was written/configured poorly, perhaps by netcardconfig. It should be set to start at a device hotplug event.

Thanks for the replies - how do I check / set individual devices to start a hotplug event?
