I would like to see a stripped sidux with no X programs, just what is needed to boot, find and load hardware to command prompt.
I want to build a MythTV minimal install with sidux system.
I know MythTV requires X and window manager, but it does not need all the word processors, calculators, etx, bloatware. I thought about using CPX, but there is not a sidux version yet
I am guessing this should keep the whole thing under 200MB. It would also be an excellent base to build a system with only the tools and software needed by the user.
Thanks |

Yes that would be interesting, however sidux is geared towards kde right now as far as the menu skeletons and everything go for sidux apps.
Anyway, that would probably be called sidux - The most unmaintainable, dist-upgradeable, uncomprehensible, diagonal, geometrical, probably unserveable, server install in the world. I'm not sure if debian/unstable is a smart choice for servers, though someone can prove me wrong.
But then you can just call that SiduxLite, or SiduxChoice, or SlimSidux, or something else relating to Slim Fast for the obese people that populate the US.
Though to sound logical, SiduxBase would appeal to users that want a small install for specific uses, which is probably what you want. |

MythTV works well with KDE, but its all the other stuff takine up the 2Gig that could hold compressed video.
There already is a HOWTO for Kanotix, but I am not smart enough on any distro to know what files to remove while keeping stability (for sid) and still have a lite version. It would still need to be able to find all the hardware and install correct drivers as it does presently, just without all the xtra's.
I have run Kanotix for a while now, haven't run the new script to give me sidux yet, and have had stability issues. Issues I did have came down to softwares not likeing to wake up properly after sleep. I now turn off DPMS in xorg.conf (or xf86), and turn off most ACPI, now programs don't behave irradic. DPMS and ACPI are great for laptops, so I don't care to run them on my desktop.
The weight problem in the U.S. is mostly because of our addiction to purified Sugar, it is in almost everything we eat. Then, as a country, we are very lazy, we have machines do everything. Most hate to walk out to the mailbox, or park more than 10 feet from the storefront.
Or as in my case, Internet addiction. |

i think we already did.
what do you think, the kanotix server is running on for the last 6 month?
exactly, kanotix 64, a distupgraded 2005-04 with latest kernels.
and it runs really flawless. if we would propagate that on any debian site or in an debian channel, of course the would call us loonies.

CPX Mini?
CPX mini still has all the extra X stuff. But I have been messing around with it to see what I can do.
It is all the libraries and such that is not needed for MythTV, but may be needed by some X program that I have no idea about that worries me. But I have an extra computer that if I mess up the OS, it is no problem to reload and try again.
I have looked at many Mini-distro's, but it is the ability of this one to dectect hardware and install the correct drivers/software. Then from that I could build a lean MythTV, and of course share with everyone how to. even if I have to strip sidux myself
Ain't nothing but learn'n.
Unstable doesn't mean a thing to me, I used Windows for 11 years, XP is the most stable, but still not what I would call excellent. I would rather get my hands dirty with an unstable software that I can learn to fix, than mess with an unstable OS that I have to wait 6 months for the next service pack. The service pack that usually causes the OS to become even less stable.
So why not Sid, been working for me for 5 months, no worse than running a Win machine. |
