Tweaking wine seems to be a bit of a dark art, I tried for ages to get photoshop to work under it using web tutorials, but eventually gave up. Would it be possible for sidux gurus to create a good script that would spice wine up a bit, or simply tweak it such that apps like photoshop could work. I assure you all that there's much demand for this particular app and many would appreciate it very much.
I know about gimp and really don't want to have yet another photoshop vs gimp thread. There are many other windows apps which wine could handle if it was set up correctly. |

when I've had problems with wine running a package, I look at the wine error codes, which usually lists the missing dlls from windows, then I grab those from any windows install and put them in place.
There are a few other wine things too, like setting the system to be either 98 or 2000 compatible, but I can't remember any of them since I basically don't use wine for anything other than msie web page testing and for one single other app I use only rarely.
I'm not going to argue for gimp vs photoshop, it's apples and oranges, gimp is free but missing many core features and ease of use stuff that photoshop has, including the mountain of plugins for photoshop, and photoshop is not free software, and must be run in wine. So comparing them is kind of pointless. The gimp and krita are both quite good for being at the stage they are at, and they are free software, photoshop is the industry standard, so that's all you need to note.
Personally, I found too many small glitches running any major windows app in wine to consider that an acceptable solution, but photoshop does run in wine, with some weird artifacts and irregularities. Maybe not the latest version though. |

That's the same advice elsewhere, on most forums too. It's why I ended up copying all the dll files from my windows system32 folder into my wine counterpart.
I use quite an old version called Adobe Photoshop Elements 2, it starts up but then immediately crashes with an odd error message:
Code:
Could not complete your request because of missing or invalid personalization information.
It is a legit copy which came pre-installed on my laptop, and works fine on my windows partition.
Google has been very unhelpful here.
Errors which appear in the terminal are:
Code:
err:reg:SCSI_getprocentry SCSI type line scan count error (fscanf returns 1, expected 2)
fixme:actctx:QueryActCtxW 80000010 0x116192c (nil) 1 0x33fdc4 8 (nil)
fixme:wintab32:X11DRV_WTInfoA Return proper size
fixme:msg:pack_message msg 14 (WM_ERASEBKGND) not supported yet

I would assume it's because you're not running a true photoshop.
elements is not real photoshop, so I'm not at all surprised to see it doesn't work.
wine/crossover got photoshop, the real one, working because Disney paid them to get it working, they wanted photoshop to run on linux workstations, and that's when and why photoshop started to work.
Obviously, disney wasn't concerned about elements, which isn't a real photoshop, so I would assume the crossover/wine group likewise didn't worry about it.
Keep in mind, wine doesn't actually support windows applications per se, it supports specific stuff that is either fairly generic, or is actually developed explicititly for, like msie, ms office, photoshop, and so on. Then sometimes if you're lucky, other stuff will also work, sort of.
However, if you're not usign real photoshop, I think I would actually make an argument for krita or gimp, or suggest you pick up a used copy of photoshop 6 somewhere, which does run relatively well. |

You have to install the application in wine (eg wine setup.exe) or to import the registry entries from the windows installation. |

Hi sk11,
have you tried to use Crossover. I'm using Crossover and Photoshop 7 and it works almost as good as it does under Windows. The only problem I had some time ago was that one of the hotkeys didn't work.
Greetings,
Puetti |

Cheers knithx, messing about with reg entries seems to have done it. Maybe your website could be linked to in the wiki section.
Not tried crossover, but since wine works ok so shrug. |

There is already a project for simple installs:
http://www.wine-doors.org/
So, this should be more a software request for wine doors in the repository than a request for a sidux wine script. |

| If you use WineDoors, WineTools, etc know that they are NOT supported in the winehq community. |
