The bug was reported in June 2007, is discussed and still open http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=431737 . Reading the discussion I feel that this "tool" was developed to "wipe as much as possible without being much sensible about what's needed". The author compares it with rm, which also can be used to wiped more than intended.
What can we learn from that? Well, there are always people creating software for their personal needs, and while they might be happy with the results they sometimes do not care much for other people needs. If you happen to have a problem with such software - better don't use it at all. The sidux team strongly recommends not to use autoremove, and we will not support the problems it's usage might create. If you rely on our support, please follow our suggestions. And - most important - please do not suggest tools you know we do not. Thank you.
Greetings,
Chris |

I am looking at the emperical data posted in this thread. So far it is consistant in its actions. So far it is reliable. Everyone has reported the same/similar results. Many do not like how it works though.
"Mr. President, we found
"What should we do?"
"Well, I order to use apt-get autoremove."
"Mr. President, done."
