Hi,
I do really want to use a distribution that uses Debian Sid. I've downloaded the latest beta and the following are a stoppers for me (I will continue use Ubuntu):
Language and keybord selection: Why not more alternatives? I use Swedish.
Display resolution:The most common used (or should be for 17" and 19" LCD displays) is 1280X1024. Why isn't it available?
NDISWRAPPER (or sidux) doesn't recognize my wireless card (Realtek 8185) so no Internet.

I would really like to use sidux but the things above are absolute stoppers for me.

Can you fix it?

before assuming something isn't available, make sure you have asked if it's available. To set resolution, run fix-res 1280x1024 as root and restart x.

Languages can be set in control center, keyboard as well.

ndiswrapper may or may not be a stopper, but it's hard to know if you actually installed it or not.

If you really want to use sidux, then just ask how to do things and don't assume they aren't there without even trying, or you're probably not going to have much fun with sidux. sidux is not ubuntu, users have to learn a bit here and there to get system up and running and to maintain it. You can't have everything, either you have super speed, performance, upgradeability, or you have ubuntu.

hi nrdind

take a look at RTBM Cheatcodes
That should take care of the language and probably resolution

If screen=1280x1024 cheatcode doesn't work, then you have to install the drivers

Your wireless won't work until you use ndiswrapper to extract the firmware from a windows driver
RTBM again and how to use ndiswrapper

note: sidux will never ship non-free/proprietary software, that's why your monitor and wireless doesn't work out of the box

setting: lang=es keyboard=es xkeyboard=es in the Grub boot line,
takes care of all that for me. Even though Spanish isn't on the CD. After install,
I just install kde-i18n-es and all is well. You can set Swedish by replacing
"es" with "se" and it should work for you.

afaik you can just press F3 (or which f-button was it...can't remember) in the FRUB - bootscreen to switch language. (something i forget very often, but usually i can help myself in that case)

one sentence on ubuntu... i have never used or tried it, but i assume in ubuntu you can just click somewhere and all is ready.
using sidux, there will sometimes be the necessity to use a console.
such as you need one für the fix-res - command.

compared to ubuntu sidux is a very small project. and we don't have space-flying millionaires as sponsors.
so please understand that it is very hard for a quite small team, with very limited hardware-ressources, to test everything beforehand and make it waterproof...

greetings,
me

I have a tft with native 1280x1024 resolution, but monitor isn't ( and was never ) recognized during hardware detection. sidux then uses generic monitor. Cheatcode does not work. But fix-res 1280x1024 + ctrl-alt-backspace works. No driver install needed in my case.

@ nrdlnd

Sorry all you who doesn't speek Swedish, I only offered nrdlnd some help in Swedish and told him to put ubuntu in the paper basket.

i only tried (k)ubuntu twice and didn't like it!
found sidux (well, *notix at the first time) much easier to handle!
and the folks here and in chat are just amazing!
plus, i'm not to fond of gnome (hence the (k) )!

back to topic!
before ranting about stuff not being there, it is always good to browse the forum, visit the chat and read the manual! (no, no RTFM here Wink )

@nrdlind: If there's something about using sidux you are not sure about, there is also a great manual to help you find your way around sidux.

there's even a channel on IRC. just click the sidux IRC icon on the desktop, enter your nick and you are in the #sidux channel. You can ask questions and there are helpful people who'll get you put at ease Smile
