Crossfire - The Multiplayer Adventure Game
Quote:
Crossfire is an open source, cooperative multiplayer graphical RPG and adventure game. Since its initial release, Crossfire has grown to encompass over 150 monsters, about 3000 maps to explore, an elaborate magic system, 13 races, 15 character classes, a system of skills, and many artifacts and treasures. Crossfire is based in a medieval fantasy world and is similar to other games of this genre.

It is in Debian main and it rocks. You can either run a local server or play online.

they is nothing against the inclusion of it.

the only (more generic) issue I can see is the meta getting bigger and bigger.
this makes it hard for me to watch for issues and keep the manual up to date.
one solution could be that users like you kinda take responsibility for the games they play often. so you'll probably notice a lot sooner than me if a game you play regularly breaks or has significant updates that may need updated manuals. also you probably can provide much better screenshots (e.g. not level 1 ,) ).

zulu9,

I don't know whether it's possible or feasible, but would it be a good idea to split games and perhaps multimedia into separate metapackages?

Quite a few of us are not interested in games and we could avoid some clutter, while the keen gamers could have their stuff conveniently available.

It might also allow a separate maintainer to share the load.

hehe not much higher than level 1, only level 6. IS there a guide on how to edit the wiki and make the whatever package for adding a game to the meta? If so I would be glad to help edit/maintain the necessary info for various games.

the metas themselves are not really a problem. those are just some lists of packages.
the hard part is a) selecting the packages (some have additonal stuff like -extras etc) b) providing info on possible issues on dist-upgrade of the packages in the meta and c) providing documentation (screenshots, config tips etc) for the meta-manual.

So if you want to help, just send me some screenshots plus info (apt-cache show of it is minimum, more is nice) and have an eye on it on upgrades. Also if it needs some manual tweaking of config files for common featues (e.g. running it fullscreen) it would be cool to have that in the meta-manual too.

Just send me the info, I will manage the technical stuff (updating the meta-package lists and the manual file).

Very Happy

"crossfire-client-x11"
Installed 1.10.0-1+b1
Candidate 1.10.0-1+b1
Priority optional
Section games
Installed-Size 332
Maintainer Kari Pahula
Architecture i386
Source crossfire-client (1.10.0-1)
Depends
libc6 (>= 2.6-1), libgl1-mesa-glx | libgl1, libglu1-mesa | libglu1, libpng12-0 (>= 1.2.13-4), libx11-6, libxext6, zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-1)
Recommends crossfire-client, crossfire-client-images
Suggests crossfire-server, crossfire-doc
Filename pool/main/c/crossfire-client/crossfire-client-x11_1.10.0-1+b1_i386.deb

Description
XLib Client of the game Crossfire
Crossfire is "a multiplayer graphical arcade and adventure game made for the X environment.
It has certain flavours from other games, especially Gauntlet (TM) and Nethack/Moria.
Any number of players can move around in their own window, finding and using items and battle monsters. They can choose to cooperate or compete in the same 'world'." To play the game you'll need to have access to a local or remote server.
Homepage: http://crossfire.real-time.com/

If all you want is to play online all you need is one of the Crossfire clients. I like the x11 client, the gtk2 client still has bugs.
If you want to run your own local server then you need the server package as well.

crossfire-server
Depends
crossfire-common, crossfire-maps, libc6 (>= 2.5-5), python2.4 (>= 2.3.90), zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1)
Recommends python
Suggests crossfire-edit

Game play is very stable and it has been in Debian main for at least a year or more.

Code:
apt-get install crossfire-client-x11 crossfire-client crossfire-client-images crossfire-doc  crossfire-server

Am I right that this will get you a complete crossfire setup with the x11-client?
Then use cfclient to start the game?

In order to play locally you also need one of the map packages. Then you start the server /usr/sbin/crossfire and then start the client, using either cfclient if you use the x11 client or gfclient if you use the gtk client. The server also starts automatically, but I would rather start/stop it myself as I prefer to have as few running processes as I can.

If you play mostly online like I do all you need is a client , either the x11 or the gtk, the gtk2 client is kinda buggy.

For some reason neither client made a kmenu entry when I installed them, so I just edited the menu and added a entry for the x11 and gtk client, under Strategy Games.

hmm. kinda lots of work for a game isn't it?
we would sure need a good detailed page in the manual for it.

Not really all you really need to play is one of the clients. then you run either cfclient or gfclient to play online.

You only need the -server -maps packages to play locally. The server starts automatically and uses which ever maps package you installed. You start the client and instead of choosing an online server type localhost enter.

The metapackage is updated. The updates for the manual are ready too.

the gtk2 client is buggy at least for me, the text is all messed up. and the sounds client doesn't seem to work. I have yet to have sounds working.
