Hi!
sidux has a great manual but so far no doc on the metas whatsoever. I think this should be changed, so I started this thread.
EDIT:
http://sidux.com/Article302.html
It is done!
Next step: Integration in meta-installer?
Original post (links broken!)
The Plan:
The idea is not to copy/rewrite existing docs and manuals for the applications in the metas but to give some nice overview about what the user can expect to get when installing a meta.
The big question is:
Are the meta-teams willing to do this work?
Be warned that this could be a lot of work depending on how big the meta is. It took me ~35 minutes to make the screenshots and collect the info for 5 games. I am willing to do it for the other games metas too, whenever I get the time.
Sample Data:
http://bluewater.sidux.com/meta-manual/ ... iew.tar.gz
to get a preview open /en/mp-g-en.htm in your favourite webbrowser |

Greetings zulu
There is one file on meta in the manual, with whats in the meta-installer, and installing meta-packaes, if behind a router
I will give you a proforma template page for the meta-document writers to use |

Looking forward to it.
I would like to build my own personal meta page startup,
to install all the things that I feel are *essential*.
So far, it's not working very well, but still working on it. |

Hi zulu9,
Yes,
I think, some informations are nessesary for the user of the metapackage. Esspecially- what he will get with the metapackage?
I think, one possibility could be to use the wiki (or parts) where the packages are described. I have it done with many packages for education some weeks before.
for example (in german)
http://www.sidux.com/index.php?module=p ... steBildung
I will try it.
OT:
But at first I want to make better the metapackage 'for_older_computer' esspecially files of configurations for icewm (preferences, menu, icons with idesk, xpdf- for example- xpdf should start with xpp as default printing-tool,...), possibility of deleting all KDE-files, login with wdm,....
Parts of this could be used for a 'Ultra-Lite-sidux-CD'
regards T. |

hi captagon
really nice what you have done in the wiki.
I still think it will be better to put it into the manual or an own special place. Very few users actually make it to the wiki and compared to the manual it is a bit ugly too. It is great for devs to discuss drafts or the package selections but I think we need a nicer way to present it to the user.
I'm currently working together with bluewater on a solution for it (first results look very promising). Of course any info that is already available will be migrated. |

Yes, I thought like you, but my intention was to say- I can use text and screenshots (or parts of this) for the manual from the wiki

I've been working with bluewater and we got a first preview on (see first post).
There will probably still be some major changes in the look & feel but the basic things are ready now.
Once we've worked out the rest I'll post some templates for the other teams and continue adding content. |

@captagon
I'll test the Icewm installer when you get something ready.
I keep going back to Icewm, because it is so easy to configure.

Here is the structure to date and please remember that this will differ from the tar considerably going forward, until i release a new tar::
link deleted
This will of course change according to whom is willing to supply the text for their 'special interest' meta-package.
The welcome text is yet to be thought about, and thus a WIP.
I do understand that some of you may be not familiar with HTML coding, so please do not despair. all you need to do is supply the text with kwrite, and it will be coded up. And do not forget to include your screen shots, (if any)
For the moment please upload the files or text to me by a forum PM in a tar
For those of you who wish to do the coding up, for your meta, there are guidelines to follow, and they will be enforced. ( I am a nice chap really, really I am . grin) please read this:
http://bluewater.sidux.com/meta-manual/ ... -01-en.htm
The tar is here and includes templates please remember this is a snapshot and may not reflect the current structure, and more important for you is the content, not the actual finalised structure, which will always be liable to change:::

Zulu is snowed under with other work related activities atm, so by the time he is on top of his section and helping me out, and the inflow of text/files from you , the contributors, we should be able to be up 'live ' for the public inside 2 weeks.
Regards
Trevor
PS You can often find me in #sidux-docs
(edited 29-06-07 0316 UTC, updated tar with basically the finalised structure and proforma files) |

The good news is, the structure is up and running and can be seen here:
Code:
http://bluewater.sidux.com/meta-manual/sidux-manual-meta-00.06.2007.07.02/en/welcome-en.htm
Proforma pages are done and linked properly in the menu apart from some stuff that zulu9 is working on
So far only piper so far has contributed, (and naturally zulu9), so I fixed that, which means, its all in a minimalist style atm
What missing:
VDR (hjt) done
Phonetics (zulu is on to this) Done
Education list is done for 3 to 10 yo by captagon
Lang packs -ru,-pl,-hr Partial completion
Games (being covered by zulu for most part)
non-free-extras
Have a look through the menus and sub menus to see the style of structure and I look forward to some more text being added to the manual
btw, if it means that some files need to be split, thats ok, I can do that
Should you find mistakes or something is missing please let me know by a post here on this thread
The new tar is here for those who want to have a shot at coding up::
Code:
http://bluewater.sidux.com/outgoing/sidux-manual-meta-00.06.2007.07.02.tar.gz
Please PM me with your text or file(s) in a tar
All in all the meta-manual is not that far off going 'live'
Regards
Trevor |
