Very fine discussion - thanks for your extended clarification. I am an Epson fanboy, too - when it comes to inkjets. They where simply the first to provide separated ink cartridges for every color on budget printers, and I support this approach. They also come with great support and true warranty, I never had any problem with any Epson client.
I ment inital cost of hardware when talking about "price" - yep.
@5) What I am talking about here is the ability to print and archive - seriously archive. People who produce stuff more important more just the "corporate spreadsheet & presentation of the week" do depend on reliable documents. I am talking about documents that would last centuries ....
@6) I was not talking about memory cards only (while I used to depend on them when producing slides for a weekly magazine in Greece years ago). I am talking about the option to add sorting, folding and several other post-print manipulation units. This may sound "big business", but actually is not. I know 1 person home businesses who stumbled into depending on such.
Overall we mostly agree, and that makes me happy.
Greetings,
Chris |

I was just trying to clarify myself. Glad we agree

The HP I suggested is a all in one, more/less equivalent to the big laser jobbers one finds in the hallway at work , but used instead for mostly SOHO user. Also this new HP had the printheads in the machine, unlike HP's older ink cartridges that had the head built into them. This cuts the cartridge cost. But that is only on these new models so far.
My mother runs a business, each month she sends out 100's of newsletters to all over the world. When she used aftermarket refills, her HP's couldn't take it. So she settled on an Epson all in one; it has now outlasted any other printer she's ever had in the office. It's a cheap Epson AIO (CX6600 I think)
Thank you,
Scott |

Does anyone uses HP Color Laserjet 2600n?
Not exactly my first choice as far as the color laser jets concerned but this was a free donation to our physics group so not much choice.
It seems that I sometimes can't print on the HP Color Laserjet 2600n. Its mainly used only in my room with few colleagues and causing a major headache.
When printing color pictures or even documents from outside OpenOffice or KdeWrte etc... error pops up about the document conversion:
Code:
The file format is not directly supported by the current print system. You now have 3 options:
* convert this file automatically to a supported format
* send the file to the printer without any conversion
* Or cancel the printjob
Neither does the conversion nor direct sending does any printing. Is there a cure for this symptom? |

On buying an ink jet, my first step is to consult my local cartridge refiller I trust. I ask him for a recommendation which brand/model is the best from point of refilling and of course in relation to that print quality. So i can always rely on him and save money by refilling with third parties ink. This reduces cost really. This is good as long as I do not need high quality print outs.
For lasers thanks to the above as the information is very worthy, in case I buy a laser. This will take place when I need higher quality. And I think emission of particles and ozonizing is an issue also.
Hope we can collect more infos about this! |

I have a samsung clp-300. It works Ok. Black text is a bit fuzzy around the edges in color mode, though. Looks great in b&w mode. Pictures are really pretty good. Not sure why text should be fuzzy in color mode, though. It doesn't do that when in windows; that is, text is always sharp when printing in windows, even in color modes.
Seems like on linux black text is send to the printer in rgb, where its separated in colors. Thats very common, when you print from office software. I think the windows driver has an option to "Print text in black" or something. |
