Slam,
Do you know of any resources that a business, institution, Linux/BSD user group could use that would assist such a group to "sale" Linux/BSD to potential customers/users. Such as legal questions, cost concerns(total cost of ownership throughout a products useful life), etc. I am away of the usuals such as FSF, OSDI, Grocklaw, etc. I am looking for an all in one "Using Linux(/BSD) in Business" and at home type resource.
Thank you for your time.
i.e. like this:
http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/unix/bsd/arc ... urce-17723
and this:
http://www.osbr.ca/archive.php
but maybe something a bit more Linux centric.
Doing some research also turned up Bluehost for webhosting, while trying to determine what the backend was running (Win, Lin, or BSD) I came across the CEO's weblog. Very interesting I'd say. I also found my answer, he more or less tells MS off. Very testicular for a CEO of a large webhosting company
Here's the blog, might be some use for this thread:

| I too have installed sidux on two of my friends computers, and even set up Fluxbox for one of them with all my tweaks;). Her system rocks and all she uses it for is Kopete and Iceweasel. Funny as hell what she has for a tool and cant use it . . . of course the same could be said of me . . I have a bunch of really cool things installed and tweaked really, really, well, but i do not study the system in depth like I know I should. Funny thing this: I own a business and could quite easily start this up, and sell it. Problem is, I dont know enough to provide adequate support in my opinion. To everybody around me I am a computer God:) but only because they see cool stuff:) It takes forever for me to make good changes that work, and then remember them again later. On the other hand because I like to play so much, I have borked my system numerous times beyond repair (for my skill level). With the latest addition of Virtual Box I no longer have to reinstall. only shame in that is how much I was learning about gparted:) |

Dedicated to those who wanted to know a bit more about rates....
I'm doing kinda business with trashware-ecology in mind, so basically I offer bundles of old hardware+sidux so that we can respect environment, avoid buying useless software and satisfy basic needs of many people (even if poor).
My "popular" rates are:
- P2, 6GB HD, 192MB RAM + sidux configured: 60¤
- P3, 6GB HD, 192MB RAM + sidux configured: 100¤
- P3, 15GB HD, 256MB RAM + sidux configured: 150¤
It's not any kinda real business, I'm basically doing this for fun and advocacy, but my "customers" till now are doing things totally independently :O even those ones who had zero exposure to linux, ever!
A great trick for several people, furthermore, is to install a KVM switch as well so they can use the monitor, keyboard and mouse of the old pc and easily switch between them; they keep one for biz and one for fun
Anyone else ready to reveal his biz? |

I will provide details about my business now that the thread has been bumped.
If you look back in this thread, you'll see that I asked about setting up such a business.... well I did it.
I don't get many customers yet, and only one wanted sidux, the rest were "fix my windows problem" kind of people, but they pay me, so I fix it for them.
The funny thing about it is, it seems that the majority of the customers only needed to have their router programmed properly, everything else was fine. A quick sale for me, the routers here as simple as hell. |

| A bit off topic, but do you use KDE on the 192MB RAM machines? Or something lighter? |

| KDE does work work quite well with 192 MB RAM, if you're a little careful with desktop effects and try to cut those down. |

Exactly, and I trim down all the unnecessary stuff (e.g. no need for bluetooth on old P2 box).
The result is a working machine. Btw, I'm right now customizing some 400MHz 320MB ram P2's and choosing XFCE to have them more responsive. I even chose a brushed theme with extremely nice icons that makes them look like mac's. |

I wonder if they have Upgrading Anonymous meetings? I try not to do it... I do it when I can... I do it when no one is around... I hide the mouse in the bed linens sometimes, so no one will suspect i do it.. it does make me feel good to do it.
Nope, I am clean and sober.... *click....upgrade* :P
Hahahahaha!
However, I'm much worse off. I wonder often if it is safe *right now* to upgrade. I only upgrade about twice a month, but I think about upgrading much more often. |

I use sidux (after Kanotix) from the beginning of the project in an Internet Cafe with 7 box (p4, 1600Mhz, 256M RAM, 20G hdd,19" monitors), started in Nov.2006 until today.
I offer especially internet access (browse and messenger) and also few linux games. In last 7 mounts I install HL under wine and work fine.
I don't make d-u on client stations. I prefer to install an fresh new release aprox. 6 mounts.
On the admin station I have always 2 installed version (for sure);an tested one an the newest one.
Is not a big deal but I'm very satisfied with sidux for a lot of reasons.
Greetings to the team! |
