Is it possible to include Beryl on the live cd ?
I have been playing with Mepis (beta version) and this distro has Beryl on the live cd.
The user can select (from the sessions screen) KDE or KDE (with 3d).
I suspect that Mepis is the first but will not be the last distro to include this.
I could see Beryl getting very popular with most linux distros including it as standard to compete with Vistas Areo crap.
This would give sidux the edge over other linux distros as its already stable and has the "just works" feel about it.

good point, so what about users with ATI GFX cards (like me).
or another idea then :-
add beryl into the meta packages option at the end of the install to HD. |

Nothing as invasive as beryl will enter the CD until it is officially present - and stable(!) - in debian sid (and therefore has security support and an upgrade path). We will not use external repositories for something like that, likewise non-free graphics drivers are not an option. When beryl enters debian sid and can be considered stable (compiz is not yet in that state) we might reconsider this and recalculate potential gains (what percentage of our users can even use it with free drivers) against their downsides (namely ISO storage, support issues, stability).
All in all compiz/ beryl are no priority for us. |

beryl is just in an such unstable state, that it wouldn't
be good to include it into the live CD.
But it's quite easy to include it after install, if you like an unstable system with eye-candy. So there's really no need to include it into the live CD.
But be aware: IT'S UNSTABLE, so use beryl at your own RISK

If you own a graphics card that is able to have working 3D including composite with free drivers you can already install and run beryl in live mode. Just boot the cd with unionfs enabled, edit xorg.conf to enable your driver and composite (maybe apt-get needed xorg parts) and follow the instructions to install beryl (same as for an installed system).
I was even able to get it to work with binary nvidia drivers once but it was some trouble and probably only luck that it even worked. But feel free to try. You can't do much wrong on a liveCD, right? (just don't install from such a "raped" system) |
