Hey Everyone,
As a few of you may know from IRC I've been doing a review of sidux. It takes a little while to go through the process of getting it published but its in the works and should be on the front page next Wednesday if everything goes as planned.
To everyone who talked to me on IRC about sidux, thanks for the information.

| I hope your review will be a bit more positive than the one on tuxmachines. At least you've taken time to visit the web site. |

Well. that is really a fair and good review. I didn't expect it being that positive having witnessed the reviewer on IRC.
Thanks, Tarential.

I don't let my personal feelings get involved in my reviews, oduffo -- but as it happens, that was just a bad morning, for many people. I'm glad you guys liked the review.

Preston,
thank you very much for giving us a chance to sort out the misunderstandings we had on IRC - as you already mentioned it was a bad morning for several of us, including myself.
This is by far the best written and most objective sidux review until today - great job, thanks!
Just let me clarify here for our forum readers (you told me that you are already aware of it): sidux does not include non-free applications, firmware & drivers on it's live CDs strictly because of legal reasons. There might be also "philosophical" or political arguments against such non-free content, but those are not the reason for our decision as a project. We simply take the GNU/GPL very serious, other distributions might do different for their own reasons.
We do make it however very easy for our users to add non-free and even commercial material by providing helper scripts, and sometimes offer ourself fixed packages in our own non-free repository. Most of that works not just after HDD-install, but also in live-mode.
Thanks again!
Greetings,
Chris
P.S.: I have of course added it with a backlink to our Review section. |

I'll be sticking around - I like sidux. I'm running it right now. I can't say that about most of the distros I review.
One thing I must note about the local copy of the review. While I have nothing against it, NewsForge reserves a period of 30 days where they get an exclusive on the article. They would probably appreciate if you waited before posting it locally. Once the 30 days is up I allow anyone to use my articles under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/).
Again, I don't really care if you reproduce it - but its possible people from OSTG might come knocking, and they have it for another 29 days.
PS I haven't even duplicated it on my personal site yet. |

Yes I'm quite sure they wouldn't mind that. And, if you want, after 30 days feel free to post the whole thing on your site with a link back to my own page (personal.aparadine.com) where I'll have it published as well.

yes, very nice review indeed!
although one complain (well, not really ), as the review got posted on 3/7/07, it would have been nice to state, that there is a final release by now, maybe as a footnote if changing in the review itself would have been too much work?
but then again, ppl who'd like to get further info pop in on the site anyway, so never mind!
again, as stated before, it is the most objective one around!
well done!

I am limited by the way NewsForge works. I cannot upgrade things at the last minute. If they choose to publish it this way that is their choice. I will not deny that I am being paid for it, and they have the rights to it for the time being. Nevertheless, I am glad everyone liked it. I try to keep my reviews accurate. |

Great review Preston
I am impressed that you took the time to get involved in the community and highlighted that in your article. I guess it would be easy to just try the install and delete it (see the tuxmachines review), but ease of maintenance plays such an important role in a sidux install.
It's a positive review and it's easy to just feel warm and fuzzy as a result, but you have provided a well rounded article, so thanks |
