Welcome to the art section of the forums - If you are an artist, or just enjoy creating and working with art, sidux needs you!
We are in the process of finalising the guidelines for artists, but it was covered in good detail by slh in this status report:
"...
One area that didn't get as much attention for Χάος as we would have liked is the artwork, handicapped early by unclear licenses for base elements we moved over to quick replacements that fullfilled all legal and license requirements and weren't able to evaluate further options late in the release process. Now that the license problems for a lot of graphic elements have been cleared up, we can start to assemble the artwork for Τάρταρος. We would really appreciate user contributions, provided their license status is clear and under acceptable dfsg - free licenses (GPL or "Artistic"), for dominant graphics consisting of several elements and especially text strings (like wallpapers, ksplash, kdm themes, etc.) we do also need access to layering informations ("source" images) to be able to adapt small things like version strings, element grouping and similar things any time, further information can be found here..."
In short, if you would like your art to be considered for inclusion in a sidux release, you will need to meet the following criteria:
1. Release your art under a license covered by the Debian Free Software Guidelines - you can get more information on which licenses are DFSG compatible (and which aren't) here
2. If your art is in a binary format, provide layered "sources" so it's possible to adapt content elements such as strings and small colour changes as/if required
You can find a simple explanation on how licensing works here (EN) or (DE) ,including templates and example scenarios
Ideally, the graphics format that best supports collaboration, is compatible with revision control systems, and provides "true" sources is the xml based SVG format. Inkscape is a powerful open source SVG editor (also check out the excellent built in tutorials!) included on the "full" sidux release. You can find the official Inkscape Manual here.
The official sidux logo has been converted to Inkscape svg and can be found here.
Co-ordination and discussion of sidux art will occur here, on the #sidux-art irc channel (check the irc channel list ), and the sidux art development mailing list (archives), so drop us a line
Thanks for visiting, all comments, suggestions and contributions are very welcome

Cleary, I would like to help out. I use to be a graphic designer and I LOVE TO BE NEEDED. Did that come off a little needy?
Anyway, the paint fumes on the new forum wing are making my head spin, so I will just leave it at that for now. |

Heyas. I'm a Graphic Design student at my college. This is by no means a qualification, but I'd like to get experience and gain knowledge from graphics veterans.
Making the icon for Lingot really got me excited to want to help out sidux!
I'd love to share the experience of helping to form the look of my favorite distro!
Where should I get started? |

First post updated with the official Inkscape Manual and more info on choosing a license for your art...
@TheBlunderbuss - it's a bit late now, but the best place for anyone else interested in getting started would be the wallpaper competition
btw - the lingot project looks pretty interesting in general, but there's no preview of your icon anywhere (maybe the screenshots section would be a good place ) |

This is the reference I use for GPL compatible licenses. Straight from the horse's mouth so to speak.
http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/
The license I prefer to use is the artistic 2 license from the perl foundation which is now "compatible with the GPL thanks to the relicensing option in section 4(c)(ii)" |

Do you have any information on whether Debian legal have reviewed this license for DFSG compatibility? |

Thanks bfree. I should have posted that dsfg link as well myself. That was an oversight on my part. And yes, artistic is one of the license options available when creating debs.
I had some discussions about this with the FSF and they were unable to answer all my concerns regarding GPL source code and artwork. If one uses multiple apps to create a picture then it becomes a quagmire with no satisfactory solution. The problem of course is defining what is source code when there isn't any code at all. For example, how is a layered xcf file the source code (like they suggest) if all the components inside the xcf were created with other apps? Calling the xcf the source in that instance is totally arbitrary. Why draw the line there when most of the work was done elsewhere?
The overall impression I gained was that it is really a square peg in the round hole sort of thing. Sure, you can make the square peg fit if you hit it with a big enough hammer but it is far better to use the round peg. When it comes to art, the perl artistic license is a round peg imo. |
