If not sidux, can someone recommend a distro:
will netboot (PXE boot, install over network from local mirror)
has server-only packages (command line only, no GUI desktop)
Thanks. |

| It would be awesome to have those Debian netinst CDs for Sid aswell, if you really want a small system or just to play around with it like you can do with the Lenny netinst. |

I am a new user to sidux, it is really nice. Before I used Archlinux I always set up my systems with a "mini.iso" but sidux only has the lite iso which is not really lite compared to other distributions. I agree with UncleVom a "mini.iso" makes no sense, when you have a really lite iso with just xorg, kdebase and the sidux stuff (smxi...) installed. You can't compare it with Puppy Linux or DSL because with a lite sidux iso you have the option to set up a system only with the programs you need. I think the most of the sidux users don't need xawtv or xsane or just want different programs for it like kdetv and kooka. So please make an iso with just kdebase then everyone have the liberty to choose what to install from the real beginning.
Grettings,
Thomas

tom96,
we are a small team only, so additional flavours will need time.
if you can contribute, please join the team.

| this flavour of sidux kinda exists already, "kde-stripped"- but one has to build it themselves. I have done and its pretty light @350mb iso. I wont say how coz i'll probably be flamed for even posting this. |

You will not be flamed by me, I'll simply warn that I am no position to answer support requests of those attempting to build sidux (or some derivative or variation of) outside of people who have contacted the sidux team as an interested developer (with some skills plus real technical ideas for improvement). |

We have a package profile that fits that description, with which we do alot of internal testing with. It doesn't contain anything that may be deemed useful on the desktop, apart from the desktop itself. As such, we didn't decide to release it, as it may only appeal to a niche market, and may not be worth the extra overhead.
We do need to rethink our release package profiles though, and come up with a plan for the future. |

It sounds good, so why don't you release it in a place for advanced users. The mini.iso image of Ubuntu is not offered for download on the official download site but you can get it by browsing the server.
I am wondering why it is impossible to do a base Debian Sid installation with customizing the sources.list and kernel afterwards? Are there more significant differences between Sid und sidux?
At this point I am very enthused about sidux and his community. I think about to join the team but I don't exactly know what I can do. I am a computer engineering student who learnt the linux base (bash, sed, awk) and some programming ( C, C++, Fortran).
Greetings,

We do not have unlimited resources like the people you mention, and can already feel the strain at times to release 2 flavours of one desktop family for two arch's.

It is not impossible, see debian-live project.
We chose to modify some things, like always having latest available kernel for best possible hwsupport, fixing long term bugs that wait for new upload from debian to fix problems... |

Ok I understand that my wish is only the wish of a small group.
What do you mean with debian-live project? To remaster the sidux lite image? But it is impossible to install a minimal Debian Sid base system with the daily build businesscard image, add sidux to the sources.list and install the desktop, isn't it? There is an article which explains the use of smxi -C but it is no longer supported. Sorry I am a bit confused.
Thank you for your patience. |
