New nvidia beta driver: 180.11

To install, do: sgfxi -co 180.11

release notes

download tested and is fine, but haven't run this driver yet, the 180 series is having major memory leaks for my system that makes it unusable.

Initial impressions with the 180.11 driver is positive. It seems like the memory leaks have been fixed. Will have to confirm with longer usage. Using it with a EVGA GeForce 7600 GT AGP card running KDE 4.1.3.

Thanks.

Hmm,
sgfxi complains that this driver would not work with xserver 1.5 (error 226 I believe).
Is that correct ?

@towo|
well so it works with your machine Smile
I also have xserver 1.5.3 from 5. Nov. and sgfxi complains here that this driver
does not support this one.
Did you do something special or just sgfxi -co 180.11 ??
From where do I get inxi ? Seems that I donot have it.
sg

Reiner Schmidt

I have never used sgfxi, but sgfxi -o 180.11 should work.
Inxi u can get here:
Code:

deb ftp://cathbard.com/ ./

Then u can apt-get install it.

Hmm,
tried it but sgfxi -o 180.11 gives me the same message.
I guess I'll pull it over from nvidia and do manual install.

Installed it manually and it works.

schmidtreiner, yes, it needs an update, I actually will need to redo that entire part, to switch it from a whitelist of drivers to a blacklist of drivers so I don't have to update each part manually with each new driver.

sgfxi 4.1, updated all kernel/xorg detections to be more dynamic, and removed some driver cruft for nvidia so that sgfxi can move ahead another year.

All should work now without much manual updating of the detection parameters for kernels/xorg versions.

I'm starting to implement more my realization that any time bugs creep in, you should ideally not only fix a bug, but fix the cause of why the code made it easy to miss, or create, the bug in the first place.

<update>
I've been running 180.11, and on my system, which experienced serious memory leaks with the last 2 180 drivers, the issues appear to be resolved, though I'll do some more testing and see if problems appear tomorrow.

So if you had that memory leak issue, give this one a try, it may work for you.

I get this message, installing the driver by sgfxi -co 180.11
Code:
Extracting NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.11-pkg2.run...
nohup: ignoring input and appending output to `nohup.out'
...
What does this mean?

however, the driver is installed and is working fine

that's something in sgfxi used to allow x to shut down fully in all cases, not the most elegant in appearances but it does the job.

Just a reminder, all beta drivers currently available are now installable for nvidia users with this: sgfxi -cB

No need to use the -o for latest manual, if it's there, it will install, if not, it will use latest stable automatically.

In either case, it will tell you what's happening, and if the beta driver was available.

This option is now also available for nvidia / smxi users as well from the graphics question, it's a new option, along with the various specific drivers and debian driver install options.
