I installed sidux a few months ago. I've loved it so much I haven't booted into windows once in well over a month. Anyways, a few days ago I upgraded the kernel to the latest version, which appears to have been unnecessary and damaging, because first I had to reinstall my video drivers before I could boot into KDE. Now I've noticed that my sound isn't working. I don't do a whole lot that uses, sound, but it's kind of annoying not having it. It worked when I installed sidux without any special configuration, but after I upgraded the kernel it quit working. Any idea what's the problem is and how I fix it?

cleary,
Thanks for your advice. I ran alsaconf as root, it loaded the card database and found my card (integrated 7.1 surround), but when it tried to install I got this output:
Loading driver...
Usage: /sbin/modprobe [-v] [-V] [-C config-file] [-n] [-i] [-q] [-b] [-o <modname>] [ --dump-modversions ] <modname> [parameters...]
/sbin/modprobe -r [-n] [-i] [-v] <modulename> ...
/sbin/modprobe -l -t <dirname> [ -a <modulename> ...]
WARNING: Error running install command for snd
Setting default volumes...

My sound still isn't working. Any idea what went wrong?

I'm afraid I'm out of ideas - I'm sure other people will want some more info on your hardware though.

can you post the output of `lspci -vv' please

I love this site. I always run man on any command I'm not familiar with, and so learn it and how to use it. The output is:

I did read that -vv made it extremely verbose, and now I see what it means. I redirected the output to a file just so I could copy it all quickly

boot into your old kernel and see if it works. I had a lot of problems with one sound card, alsa, and new kernels, and finally gave up on that system and switched to etch and old kernel.

Is it sound over PC speakers and kernel 2.6.26? Does give you (as root)
Code:
dmesg | grep pcspkr
anything?

If yes, this
Code:
lspci | grep pcspkr
should give you snd_pcspkr or sth.

And this might be the solution as root:
Code:
echo "blacklist snd-pcspkr" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
Reboot.

If it is not PC speakers and not kernel 2.6.26, I might be wrong.

How do I do that? I thought when I installed my new kernel my old one was erased

Thanks. I'm gonna give that a try right now

Edit: Not happening. I booted up in the old kernel. I got the same results. I'm wondering if maybe it's not that kernel at all. Thoughts?

hubi, I tried your idea. However, when I ran
Code:
lspci | grep pcspkr
I got nothing. I think that you think my sound card is in a slot. It is not. It is built into the motherboard. Thanks for the try, though. Maybe my sound card has fried. Can an integrated card even do that?

You can try ...

control center > sound & multimedia > sound system > enable the sound system > then go to > kmenu > multimedia > kmix > it will shoot down to the lower right hand corner in the kicker, make sure all sliders (except MIC) are up and nothing is muted > settings > configure kmix > apply. DO NOT restart x you will lose the settings, either reboot right away or later.

also

Code:
/home/username/.kde/share/config/kcmartsrc

replace

StartServer=true
with
StartServer=false

Try this:

/etc/modprobe.d/sound

file "sound" should contain this line:

Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

it may sound silly, but are your PCM (or the channels you are using) and master volume controls at reasonable levels and not muted ? They were in my kmix and it took me quite some time to trace it.

Also might want to boot up a live cd (or into windows), and just make sure the sound hardware actually works for any OS.
