I've been trying to find ways to connect to the missus' laptop with varying success.
My first thought was bluetooth but I've been unable to get it working her side and my experience of bluetooth is that it's pretty slow.
Next I tried firewire.
I got this working and was ablt to transfer files quickly using gFTP but it reuires quite a few manual steps and is pretty fiddly.
Idealy, I would like to be able to connect to her comp and run commands as well as transfer files (so I can do various things without having to constantly go upstairs or wherever to type things for her).
Or even do the remote desktop thing but I have no knowledge of this type of thing whatsoever and I'm not sure I could do this anyway since we share a router with the same ip address etc (currently wired but will be wireless in the next day or two).
Any ideas?
<EDIT>
After running ifconfig I noticed that her comp is actually given a different ip address to mine (obviously when you think about it but I didn't) and I am able to transfer files via konqueror by simply typing
sftp://ip.address.of.her.comp
followed by her username and password.
Not sure about running commands and stuff though or controlling her desktop. |

Yep, SSH does it, I can run apt-get updates and stuff and launch graphical apps on her comp (at the moment the most constructive thing I've done is use kdialog to make insulting popup boxes appear ).
Where can I find tips on remote desktop use?
Also, as this is all done internally, is it safe from the baddies? |

The manual has plenty of info on SSH but I can't find anything on remote desktop.
I'll look into vnc. |

I had a similar problem about a year ago. I didn't know where to look in the manual and it was early days for sidux, anyway, so I asked the sidux team on IRC. Half a dozen nice guys came up quickly and had me up and runing with fish and ssh in a few minutes over my 802.11.g network.
I bookmarked the commands in konqueror and have used it ever since for regular backups. |

Sorry for perhaps getting a bit offtopic, but is there a way to start graphical applications remotely via ssh, and not only have it displayed on the remote machine (by "ssh -X"), but simultaneously on both ones? |

One issue I have using SSH.
In the manual it suggests some changes to /etc/ssh/sshd_config.
One of these is to change the port to something other than 22.
I changed this on both computers to use a different port and restarted ssh but it is still trying to connect though port 22 and I am then unable to connect to her comp. |

shame
Port <desired port>: This must be set to the correct port that you are forwarding from your ROUTER. Port forwarding must also be setup in your ROUTER. |

I am sad to say ( unless its changed over the last 12 months) , 'fish' is absolutely borked, its very erratic , works for some, some of the time , then says, ahh bugger this and goes walkabout.
sftp:// works well however its has huge 'handshake protocols" (higher than ftp)
Regarding

"is there a way to start graphical applications remotely via ssh, and not only have it displayed on the remote machine (by "ssh -X"), but simultaneously on both ones?"
No idea: ssh -X whateveapp (eg oocalc) does as it intended , that is display on a remote PC , not sure about the 'simultaneously' option, that seems to be a collaboration aspect , I dont think ssh -X supports that, (I stand quite willingly to be corrected)
Perhaps move to SVN ? or one of the offerings of umm, ahem, say, uumm "some company that is really keen to own your personal data on their servers" type organisation? |

I'm looking too a simple way to connect my sidux laptop with a windows laptop through an ethernet cable.
I read the manual about samba but was hard to realize. Have you any suggestion?
PS: I'm good with all software, but ignorant with networks. |

you use a crossover cable or a switch to connect the computers?
I think, samba for simple use at home isn't difficult to configure.
The use of ssh-server at the linux-computer and puTTy at the Windowsclient is also an easy way (but is a 'one way' thing)- if you want to use Windowsfiles from the linux-client, you must install an ssh-server at the windows computer.
