That's how we started. After almost 2 years, please compare to reality and comment. Are we still on track? Do we need to adapt?
Greetings,
Chris

YES.

I congratulate the sidux team on achieving these goals. I personally enjoy the results of success with #6 -- excellent 64-bit performance. Great job!

1) sidux detects and enables you to instantly use more different pieces of hardware than any other operating system today (including other Linuxes), without the need to search for drivers from the hardware vendors' web sites or complicated installation routines. Everything comes ready on a fast live-CD, and can be installed to your hard drive in just a couple of minutes. Only non-free stuff may require additional action.

We do. There are things like the eee or even the vbox-compatibility. The installer is really fast but could need some more devs/coders to add some features like encrypted disks. Installing non-free stuff is easy enough and the release notes provide good documentation on what is to do for what kind of non-free piece.
So we are on track here.

Quote:
2) sidux gives you direct and 100 % compatible access to the world's biggest repository of software packages [...]

3) sidux is free and open source and comes with free & priceless 24/7 support via this forum and chat (the IRC). [...]

4) sidux is not corporate driven or owned, but community driven.[...]

True.

Quote:
5) sidux is extremely flexible and offers a bulk load of ready made scripts and meta-packages. You may use them to mutate it into a secure server system, a high class music studio, a professional graphics design workstation, a corporate desktop—or whatever you actually need.

We are making progress on that one. The meta-packages are getting better (could be more there), we got stuff like ceni and the xfce-version.

Quote:
6) sidux is always bleeding edge technology, packed into a tested and stable combination which is ready for use. It is moving very fast, and will always bring to you the hippest and most interesting developments first. sidux is also one of the few operating systems where you can get a 64bit system with real 64bit compiled applications—and again providing the 100 % compatible access to Debian Sid.

I think we've dealt with sid pretty well even through the unavoidable rough times. The warning systems have worked quick enough in most cases. And with the combined iso you get 32 and 64bit on one disk.

We got a new challenge right in front of us now. kde4 will be in sid pretty soon and this will be a major change esp. for the established user-base. and it also might lead some new users too that want to have a rolling release to stay current on kde4. So we need to update the documentation, probably some tools and get familiar with it to be able to support it.

Quote:
7) sidux is multilingual—people from all over the world meet here and talk in their native, but also secondary languages.

The languages are mainly en/de for the forums and IRC but people comer from all over the world. The manual is available in lots of languages.

So taken all points together it looks like we are on the right track. Very Happy

I have had a great experience with sidux. It starts with the people first, before the os. Your goals you have set you have met thus far with flying colors, and the support (I am afterall a moron and break things constantly) is always great. You have rehabbed me from my distro hopping ways

I too would have to agree with "having a great experience". I run sidux on everything from a 500 mhz laptop (lxde or xfce desktop environment)...to the newest thing is have which is still old (P4 3.2 gig hyperthread). I've had some bumps and grinds along the way (some self induced) but all in all to me this is "the os to run". I have introduced a few others to sidux and they too have decided to keep as the os of choice. Anyway....a big thanks to the sidux team, you rock.
