I tried to build a dual boot system XP with sidux 2008-02 for 18 hours and
never did get sidux functional.
My system is:
Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 Processor HH80557PG0491M - 2.20GHz, 1MB Cache, 800MHz FSB, Allendale, Dual Core, OEM, Socket 775, Processor with ASUS V-60 92mm Vapo Bearing CPU Cooler
EVGA nForce 650i Ultra Motherboard - T1 Version, NVIDIA nForce 650i Ultra, Socket 775 , ATX, Audio, PCI Express, Gigabit LAN, USB 2.0, Serial ATA, RAID with 2 - Crucial 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz Memory
XFX GeForce 8400 GS Video Card - 512MB DDR2, PCI Express, DVI, VGA, HDTV, Video Card
Western Digital Caviar SE WD5000AAJB 500GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 Hard Drive
Sony DRU190A 20X DVD Rewritable Drive - 20x DVD±R, 8 DVD+RW, 6x DVD-R, 8x DVD±R DL, ATAPI/EIDE
I used a LiveCD of Gparted/Clonezilla 2.3 to make the following partitions on the 500 Gig IDE drive and format them as ntfs/ ext3 and linux-swap:
120 G = XP = ntfs = sda1as shown by Gparted
25G = / = ext3 = sda2 as shown by Gparted
2.5G = linux-swap = sda3 as shown by Gparted
~347G = /home = ext3 = sda4 as shown by Gparted
XP was installed on the 120G Partition in ~ 40 minutes.
I booted the LiveDVD of sidux 2008-02 and the desktop icons didn't load properly. I tried to make the proper
mount points for / & /home. sidux had already assigned the XP mount point as /media/diskpart1. After sidux was installed I ran Gparted again and / & /home mount points had been assigned as /media/diskpart2 & /media/diskpart3. sidux would load but had no desktop icons and kept givng me errors. It wouldn't read files from CDR's, wouldn't see usb Flash drives etc.
When I plugged in my Centon DSP4GB-007 Data Stick Pro 4GB USB Flash Drive it wasn't mounted. It was seen by hotplug
because I could see it in Gparted as sdb1, but it was unrecognized. Plus all my 8 Gig of data was gone. (I tried plugging it in my Laptop which has Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, and it wouldn't work. I had to boot XP and format the USB drive, which lost all my data, to make it usable again.)
Is it possible to make sidux dual boot with XP? I have a 20 Gig WD IDE
with only sidux on one partition and it runs fine on the above system.
I also tried removing all partitions, creating & installing XP in a 120G partition, then booted the sidux LiveDVD, used sidux to create the linux partitions, assign the mount points, and I had the same type of problems. Can't sidux install to / and also use a /home partition for my data during the install process?
The next day I repeated the above but used Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, and everything
went smooth. Ubuntu installed fine.....but I wanted sidux.
What am I doing wrong with the sidux install? Is there a problem with sidux?

hi,
there is certainly nothing wrong with sidux, but probably with your iso or install media.
an easy way to find out is: enter the cheatcode md5sum into grub bootline while booting the cd.
that will test all md5sums and give you a result, either stopping at some point with a wrong md5sum or booting normaly.
please do that and come back with the result.

Guys,
Yes, that is exactly what I thought!. I've already done that. I've used K3B, verified the md5sum TWICE, burnt two DVD's at the slowest speed K3B will burn, and used both DVD's on several attempts to install. Sony DVD burner is Brand new and didn't have any problem installing XP! DVD's were made on the New Sony with the install I did on the 20G Western Digitial.
Media is Maxell DVD-R 16X
More suggestions?

So sidux was installed... isn't it graphic card driver problem? you say you have GeForce 8400 GS,
I think, it needs nVidia's non-free driver. You should install sgfxi and install driver with it.

He possibly has an xserver problem, but should I would guess not.
As an aside, I am here with sidux 2008.2 on AM2X2 nforce4, ( very similar board to his but a DIY ) _ with 8400 card, multibooted with XP and SuSE, and there was no problems getting sidux up. In fact default settings were great out of the box.
I would guess he used default K3b settings. Will often check OK, or the install was screwed.

please get the kde-lite version and put it on a cd and try again.
there was some cases where the dvd did not install correctly where the cd did.
dont ask me why.
btw.: for cd k3b does not burn dao by default, you have to set it.

Devil,
I double checked the md5sum when using K3B. I burnt three more copies with DAO and 4x, and one copy at 8x. Out of all of these DVD's I have two that will boot into sidux with the proper opening desktop. At times I get the following message:
ERROR - Kdesktop
Could not start process
unable to create IO slave
klauncher said.
I have powered off, and let the machine off for 3-4 minutes, re-booted several of the DVD's and I now have two that will boot to the properly displayed Desktop with the manual and IRC etc as LiveDVD's. The 4x versions seem to work the best.
Now that I am up and running with a good install, I am still wondering what gives with the DVD's, and K3B, or is it something with the way sidux is loading from the DVD?
It cost me 18 long hours of suffering last Saturday. I just couldn't believe that sidux wouldn't load, but everytime I'd stick a CDR of Ubuntu, or Fedora in they would boot from the LiveCDR perfectly.
But, I stuck to my original plan of sidux!
Suggestions? Followup? Any other reports, or case histories?

Devil,
I have verified each programs md5sum with the LiveDVD option and they all verify good on the DVD that does not work as a LiveDVD. I removed the quiet switch and get one of the following two messages most of the times I boot the LiveDVD. Sometimes it just locks up my machine and sits there.......but not usually.
When I get the first message the LiveDVD boots somewhat but things don't appear to work correctly and NO Desktop Icons are loaded. The message is:
Error -Kdesktop
Could not start process unable to create IO slave
klauncher said........
OR these test messages are on the screen when I removed switch QUIET:
Probing Devices [sr0]
Detected live squashfs filesystem on /dev/sr0
loop: moudle loaded
Failed to mount squashfs filessytem
Busybox V1.10.2 (Debian 1:110.2-1) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'HELP' for a list of commands.
/bin/sh: can't access tty: Job control turned off
(initramfs)
and then the system LOCKS up here.......
If I continue to boot 6-10 times I might get the LiveDVD to boot correctly ONCE.
ALL DVD's were burnt on the same NEW SONY DVD DRU-190A burner on a good install of sidux on a 20 Gig Western Digitial. (I am trying to upgrade to a larger Hard Drive now, and that is what started the problem.)
Thanks.

If the media boots fine on a different pc, you can rule out media issues.
You may have a defective cd drive, or if you have a hdd with a linux swap partition on it, this could also be causing problems with the cd booting (don't ask me how/why, I've just seen it).

I've consistently have had this problem on an older pc with a number of distros. In some cases I can get them to boot with the "nodma" boot option. This means no dma for the cd drive, which slows things down considerably, but at least it will boot. Sometimes. If you can get it to install successfully, then you shouldn't need to use "nodma" to boot from hdd.
The other thing to check for is if you have master/slave of your various drives configured correctly (since you say you just installed a bigger drive). |

piper,
Here is your information.
The LiveDVD was made with K3B DAO 4X and I have it marked as "SOMETIMES" since it boots correctly sometimes. I booted it, and added the cheatcode md5sum and everything verifed good, and I suspect it is correct.
I booted to my 40Gig sidux system, then inserted the LiveDVD, and restarted:
On the first menu selection I added
fromiso
it booted up correctly on the LiveDVD.
Second time reboot, it gave me the kdesktop error ......... klauncher said.
Powered off next two times for 30 seconds.
Powered up and booted two times and it worked good.
next was a restart and it worked good.
restart again from the LiveDVD and I got the kdesktop error.....klauncher said.
So, at least by using the cheatcode fromiso it boots correctly about 4 out of 6 times. Without the fromiso is is more like 3-4 times out of 10 that it boots correctly. But, two other DVD's I have made from the same Maxell 16x spool seem to work everytime. I've dug down in the stack to get an assortment to test and it doesn't seem to make much difference.

hmmmm, I'm sorry but there isn't a cheatcode 'fromiso' to effect anything...
When you boot from Live-CD or Live-DVD, it boots from iso on CD/DVD, and cheatcode 'fromiso' would be just
ignored. What piper suggested is to boot from the iso file on the harddisk, without CD/DVD media.
The method to boot fromiso is on manual, (the word 'fromiso' in the piper's post is actual link to that page.) |
