Post subject: system/desktop freezes/ hangs for a few to many seconds  PostPosted: Jul 29, 2008 - 12:34 PM

I have installed the latest sidux, and it is working great except that the system hangs for a few moment every once in a while. I've done a full dist-upgrade and still the same problem.
I have noticed these lines come up when using the command line (in root):

ata1.01:exception Emask 0x SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
ata1.01:cmd a0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00:00/00 tag 0
ata1.01:Status: {DRDY}

This happens less when on battery.
System is Asus A8 laptop.
I remember I had this problem many moons ago on a different laptop and i think it was to do with the hard drive being ide and software seeing sata or ata or something, but I can't remeber how I fixed it.

Any help appreciated
Thanx
James

I've seen that, it may mean your hard disk is dying, or there is some bug in the controller or its driver, I get that on an old machine now and then. Also an ide hard disk. As you note, the system (it's the whole system, not just the desktop) hangs, sometimes recovers, sometimes doesn't.

I also have debian etch and lenny on other partitions with no problems at all. so I don't think it a dying disk.
It does freeze badly with ubuntu (thats why I'm here!)
The reason I think its software related is I have a vague recollection of installing some software so the kernel sees a sata disk rather than an ide disk, or something.
Normally its only the applicaion I'm using that hangs. I can't open new apps but can open menus. Then the HD light flashes alot, then its back to normal.

I don't know the answer to this, but I've changed laptops and sidux works beautifully on a thinkpad r61.. Laughing
