Post subject: How to install KDE 4.1 ?  PostPosted: Jul 29, 2008 - 10:35 AM

I have a spare laptop that Id like to experiment with.

Ideally I would like to install sidux on it with KDE 4.1.

I understand that I would have to install sidux live cd then upgrade to KDE 4.1.
This is not a problem as it is just a test (may not work).

Does anyone have steps how to do this (for example would i need to change the sources.list file ?)

Thanks in advance.

RD

Hi, it looks like the 4.1 (released on July, 15th) has got many improvemnts, at least according to this short review
http://www.linux.com/feature/142661

If you'd check the wiki (Wink) there is this page
http://sidux.com/index.php?module=pnWikka&tag=KDE4

that leads here:
http://ekaia.org/blog/2008/05/29/how-to ... erimental/

It was at 4.1beta1 time, but I guess it should still work.

Let us know if it goes

Cheers

[edit] Just tried on a VM, it works great.
And for all the people not liking the new kickoff menu, it's possible to use a normal one.

Look here:
http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/experimental.html

Just use apt-get instead of aptitude and everything should work fine.
The part "Upgrading installed experimental KDE 4 packages automatically" is handy, too.

I'm using KDE4.1 since beta 2 that way and had no serious problems so far.

I'm going to get a live disk of it myself, for the time being. I guess it's going to be another couple of months before Lenny goes stable and 4.1 enters Sid.

hmm interesting, none of the instructions work.

by this I mean that when I follow the instructions and enable the experimental stuff I cannot install the following :-

kdebase-workspace
kdeplasmoids

The error I get is "package not found"

So clearly I must be looking at kde 3 still yet my sources list is now set (as per the instructions) to :-

deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ sid main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ experimental main contrib non-free

any ideas ?

the "package not found" error is strange - did apt-get update show any errors? Maybe you could try another mirror?

I currently use kdeplasma-addons instead of kdeplasmoids (currently stuck at version 4.0.82, or something like that...)

I ran the apt-get update and had no errors

I just wonder if the mirror I am using has not updated yet

funny thing is, If i reinstall kde 3 and then use synaptic I can see some kde 4 packages :-
kdebase-runtime
kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4
systemsettings

So I know that I have enabled the correct repositries in the sources.list

I will have a play here still and advise

when i run 'apt-cache policy kdebase-workspace', I get the error :-

W: Unable to locate package kdebase-workspace

It would appear that core package does not exist.

checking the kde website and it would appear that all variants of Linux are not catered for yet :-

ftp://kde.mirror.anlx.net/stable/4.1.0/

maybe I am jumping the gun a bit and i should wait a few days to install kde 4.1

I wanted to have a look at Kde 4.1 and thought a live distro was the simplest option so downloaded Suse 4 live from here. Which now has kde 4.1

ftp.de.debian.org over here, too.
maybe it really is just a mirror problem.
I got 4.1.0 from the debian repos two days ago

I tried with ftp.de.debian.org and still the same problem.

If I install synaptic and search for kde 4 only the runtime for kde 4 exists.

I have got around this problem by downloading the suse kde 4.1 live cd and I must say KDE 4.1 looks great and runs really well.

I wonder when it will become available for sid ?
