Post subject: A few snags upon testing sidux for new os on laptop  PostPosted: Jul 24, 2008 - 02:20 AM

So, to start I'll admit that I'm still pretty much a novice to linux. Please bare with me, but I have tried to do my homework.

So I'm testing out some new distros for my laptop (gateway m460), for my current isn't cutting it anymore (no audio). So far, out of the many that I've trial run sidux has been most appealing. Just a few problems. I can't get "apt-get install ipw2200-firmware" to work, nor can I save to the directory I read about in a separate forum. lib/ something. This very well could be due to the fact that I'm still running from the live disk, not ready to commit. You could call it cold feet, but this is my only method to the net with out going over to my neighbor's and hitting the ethernet. Ya, he let me hook up a wireless router Laughing But I did go over there to do the whole "apt-get update" Any suggestions?

Another issue I have is with the scroll field on my touch mouse. It take up quite a bit more space than usual, causing me to scroll desktops and screens when I'm not meaning to (a lot). Any way to adjust that?

If I can get those things resolved than I'm pretty much sold. But there is one other thing. I'm sure this is just a matter of downloading and installing a theme, but is the "Crystal" theme compatible with sidux (told ya I'm a newb)? I really dig the whole see through effect. Rather eye catching. If you know of anything cooler I'm all, uh... eyes Rolling Eyes Really dig the see though konsole as well. Is that something that comes with the crystal theme or something different?

Sorry if I'm asking of some obvious garble, but if you know of any rather comprehensive methods of learning more about linux whilst being on a tight budget (i.e. free!!! Very Happy ), please lay it on me. I'm really interested in learning more about linux, but so far most of the web sites that I've drudged up in my searches have been pretty vague an esoteric, at least for a newbe like myself. But any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'll bet you'd never guessed it, but this is literally the second forum post I've EVER posted Embarassed You really know how to bring it out in people sid Wink

welcome mindyourmatter,
firmware has nonfree parts, so you will need to expand your sources.list to enable apt to see those.
the easiest way for you to do that is to go to metapackage-installer on the k-menu. there you find a tab called non-free sources. hit the 'install non-free' button
then go to the 'metapackages' tab, look at the non-free section. your intel 2200 firmware is there.
after installing that, all you need to do as root is: modeprobe the module and call ceni to configure your device.
if you have problems with that, please come to our irc channel #sidux.
there is an icon on the desktop that takes you right there.
the problem with the firmware is, you needv to be connected to the net somehow or put it on pendrive.
any other probs can be solved in our chatroom fast and besides that its a great resource for learning, if you hang out there.

hi mindyourmatter,

devil made a typo, after downloading and installing the firmware, the command should be:

modprobe <modulname>
