Post subject: System hangs on booting all available kernels.

Yesterday I did a dist-upgrade with smxi script , all went fine also after reboot.
But then I had to boot into my winXP partition , which went fine, and when I wanted to boot to sidux again, the system stops after a few bootup messages and gives me a login prompt , but when I login (in cl) nothing is loaded, and I can't get anywhere from here, no apt-get , no smxi script , no mc nothing.
I tried 4 other kernels from mu grub menu but all the same.
I think the problem starts on bootup after this message ;
Loading the saved-state of the serial devices........
then a lot of messages about /etc/rcS.d/ scripts that refer to a command to a command that is not found
some of the related scripts in /etc/rcS.d are
S41hostname.dhcp
S48consol-screen.kbd.sh
S55bootmisc.sh
I loaded a live CD to see error in /var/log messages ;

I can't seem to fix my system, so I'm afraid I have to do a reinstall (first in years) .
Is there a way to find out exactly what packages I have installed on my current setup, so that I can install the same packages after a reinstall? |

dpkg -l
there was thread for better command (using same dpkg -l with filter to exclude libraries) and the command to reinstalling the packages from that data. |

If you have access to you system you could do following
Code:
dpkg --get-selections > old_packages.txt
Save the file at some safe place. Then in the newly installed system you can restore all the packages with
Code:
cat old_packages.txt | dpkg --set-selections
But as far as I know, this will not be useful if you cannot boot your system at all.

I think the problems are in /etc/rcS.d and /etc/init.d
I have laptop with same sidux install as on desktop, how can I make a copy of my laptops /etc/rcS.d dir?
This dir is full off shell scripts and symlinks , but when I try to copy them to a usb-stick I get errors about permissions,
How do I copy content of /etc/rcS.d to usb-stick and keep the right connections in the symlinks? |

if you are root, probably there will not be permission problem. But it doesn't sound good to copy the content of
/etc/init.d to other computer... probably you should check each file side by side. and see where is problem.
If the disk has problem on that directory, copying these files won't fix the problem. And if you touched sidux's
pertition from windows file manager (? have you tried to open the drive? did it want to format to NTFS? ??)
it may not be recovered this way... |

I didn,t change anything, I did a dist-upgrade with smxi and there were no errors.
I can boot my winXP partition and that works fine, so no hardware problem I think. |

But as you described. dist-upgrade went OK, and you had working sidux.
Then you booted Windows, and next sidux boot failed.
So my deduction is that during Windows was on, sidux's file system was damaged.
(sure, other possibility was that d-u on smxi didn't show error, but it damaged /etc/init.d
and you didn't notice it untill you rebooted sidux after Windows. but from my/our experience,
I don't believe smxi or apt-get dist-upgrade caused this problem...)
One possible horror story, is that you have installed sidux on partition that WIndows uses as swap.
if you have booted Windows for the first time after sidux installation... 8( |

the same windows and sidux install have been on this machine for more than a year whitout a problems, so I realy don't know what this problem could have cost.
ps ihave some older backups of my sidux install on my local server that were made with sbackup (simple backup config) , but I can't find out how to do a restore when I cannot boot into my sidux-install anymore, has anybody an Idea how to restore with sbackup? |

I was looking at release notes of sidux 2008-2 and saw mentioning of,
dash , kbd , and cpufrequtils.
These were also mentioned in my error messages at boot.
But anyway, I think I do a reinstall. |
