Hello everyone
I've been trying to make my Vodafone Greece supplied HUAWEI modem E172 for 3G networks. Unfortunately it is not possible (yet) to have DSL on my area so that was my only choice for fast internet. And we all know how annoying things can be on Linux without internet
So, on a past installation of Erevos, i used the E220 modem which worked fine. I was able to configure kppp and connect to the 3G network. After a couple of other distro installations, i finally switched back to erevos again and now I have the E172 modem, which makes it hard for me. Anyone cares to share his HUAWEI kppp configuration and experience? |

blackcoatman, sorry I can't help much with your E172.
I have the E220 which works with wvdial and gprsconnect.
gprsconnect is an annoyance; it must be run as root and reconfigured after each time I start it. However that configuration is just entering the correct modem device and my provider's APN, this has been tested on more than one machine. If the kernel sees the modem (look at dmsg after you plug it in) that might work for you.
wvdial was more difficult to configure as is probably kppp. With wvdial the wrong dns addresses are often got then need two or three retries before I get internet access.
Please can you post your kppp settings for the E220 so I can try that? |

I have a Huawei E 160G, provided by the Three network in Australia. I loaded and ran Vodafone Mobile Connect Card driver for Linux.
Two problems:
1. If the modem is plugged in, BIOS stalls and I can't boot.
2. When I run Vodafone-blah-blah after booting then plugging the thing in, it stalls at "Authenticating".
Where do I go from here? I'm a desperate little sidux lover in Queensland. |

devil (or other kind helper),
I've installed the vodafone gui and it stalls at "Authenticating", with the progress bar active forever.
I loaded umtsmon, entered my root psswd and it stalled at "Waiting for SIM interface" and SIM card handling error messages.

Silly paleoflatus - I just found a hidden slot for the SIM card. I was sent one, but assumed it was for a 3G phone (if I ever get one). There was no information sent and I found the slot only by accident!
Now, umtsmon gets to a frame with a yellow box in it, but refuses to connect.
Error messages:
<<PPP did not provide any stdout information>>
/usr/sbin/pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself
/usr/sbin/pppd: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so.
I'm not aware of a password, except the 0000 default for e-mail.
I'm out of my depth! |

1.) run umtsmon as root
2.) create and fill in a profile (first icon in the yellow lil window

devil,
Thanks again. I've found that and fiddled with it, but I think the problem is that the 3 network failed to give me a user name and password. I've sent them a request, but no reply yet. I gave up phoning call centres years ago. Hopefully they'll get back to me tomorrow - they're the losers, as they can't charge me until it works and my old ISP doesn't drop out for a couple of weeks.
My impression is that it has to be something fundamental like that, as linux networking is usually so very good.
I'll keep you posted. Greetz to you, too. |

@paleoflateus, I dont know if 3 network works differently in Australia I thought it was much the same everywhere. You shouldn't need a username and password for 3, it's all in the sim card.
Note I have e220 which might be different or maybe not
What you need in UK:
provider's APN "3internet"
number to dial "*99#"
Password doesn't seem to matter
You might need modem init strings.
Here's an extract from my wvdial.conf. I dont use wvdial but it works. Maybe it will help setup a profile for that or other methods.
Code:
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Baud = 3600000
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 =AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","3internet"
Area Code =
Phone = *99#
Username = ppp
Password = ppp
Ask Password = 0
#providers dns unreliable so
Auto DNS = 0
I found gprsconnect simplest to configure at first ; umtsmon or other of your choice for regular use. |
