Hi,

I just made du to my main pc a couple of hours ago (everything went well). Then I decided to update kernel from 2.6.25.9 to 2.6.25.11 and...... booting stops at "Begin: waiting for root file system..."

I tried the actions described in the news, so first deleted the "/etc/udev/rules.d/65_dmsetup.rules" file. But when I issue the "udevadm trigger" command.... NOTHING happens Sad

Every new boot the damn file to delete reappears.... so what should I now do?????

i wonder why you still get this bug.
after entering 'udevadm trigger' nothing visible happens, you have to wait like 2-3 minutes to be sure OR delete 'quiet' from the grub bootline.
then you can see what happens after the command.

I've been waiting 10 minutes after the command, and my grub bootline never has quiet by default. There is no output, nothing scrolling down, I just get a new prompt, and all the rest of the procedure fails.

In particular, neither exit nor alt+ctrl+Fx works.... should I maybe boot from CD and chroot to do something else????

I'm astonished from the fact that I smxied the machine just 2 hrs ago.... and it's an Erebos install. Last du was less than a month ago. The only problem I had on this machine was madwifi not working (because of ath5k, notwithstanding blacklisting it): I was du-ing and upgrading kernel to try to fix this.

Now the machine does not even boot.....

Btw, I never used LVM. Can't I just boot CD, chroot, purge dmsetup and go?

yes, but you need to regenerate your initrd as well.

dmsetup is also used for other things, like cryptsetup, fakeraid (dmraid), etc., furthermore you really should investigate why you still have a broken dmsetup version and what intereferred with upgrading it.
