If you see this problem, you need to:

apt-get remove --purge samba samba-common

Then

apt-get install samba samba-common (plus whatever other packages were removed with samba)

then unfortunately you need to reset your samba passwords and so on.

I'm not sure if this is a generic problem or something that just happened to me, but I put samba samba-common on hold in smxi just in case.

I'd recommend to make a backup copy of /etc/samba/smb.conf before to try to upgrade samba. BTW, you should only worry if you have samba as a server. I don't think the client part would have any problem

one idea would be to include smb.conf in the backups that smxi makes when it runs

since nobody else appears to have this issue, I'm taking it off hold, please post if you have a problem though.

I had a problem which showed up as unable to share files with virtualbox. Went back to testing and everything is OK.

Should this SID older versions not be put on hold?

I did downgrade to testing and samba does work, but smxi wants to upgrade to SID version again?
Should I manually locked the testing versions to enable smxi to operate until all clear is given on the 'broken' SID versions of samba?

Thanks in advance for advice

I'm manually 'holding' samba and samba-common for the time being.
