Last d-u was before the recommendation not to upgrade.
System up and down a couple of times since then.
When booting tonight, unable to login as user and automatic network start failed. I didn't notice until I tried smxi. Restarting network did not work. Tried several times, but no success. Found some error messages denoting problems writing to /dev/null. /dev/null had permissions 660. Weird.
Rebooted to an older kernel. Same results with networking, but this time 'ifup eth0' did the trick. Ran a d-u, then rebooted to latest kernel and did smxi to rebuild the nvidia module.
Now all is well. Network autostart works. /dev/null has permissions 666. No login problems.
Don't have a clue what caused this. |

The description of the problem seems different from the one on the front page, linked above by ralui -- and the front page says
Edit: the problem is now resolved in the debian repos. |

My experience doesn't really match the description in the warning on the homepage, and in any case I had upgraded a couple of days before this. Also rebooted a couple of times.
Oh, well, chalk it up to gremlins, and thanks to backup kernels and the ever effective smxi.
Rolling onward. |
