Post subject: has anyone tried to install kde4 recently?

with the release of kde4-rc1, i figured i'd give it a go, so i enabled the experimental repo and tried to apt-get -t experimental install kde4-minimal. it came back with the following errors:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kde4-minimal: Depends: kdebase-workspace (>= 4:4.0.82) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdebase (>= 4:4.0.82) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
i think the version in the repo is 4.0.98, not 4.0.82, but i'm not entirely sure how to check. any help would be greatly appreciated so i can test drive kde4.[/code] |

i know it is not kosher to say, but I would use synaptic, point it to experimental, and install packages 1 at a time. Avoid the meta-packages.
If worried about upgrading in X, when done, go to file a click on generate a package download script. Then drop to level 3 run the scrip and dpkg -i *.deb. |

Or..
I get the same error when I run
apt-get install kde4-minimal
Try instead
apt-get install kde4-minimal -t experimental
Just about all the packages (and all the core ones) are at the same version right now, so it is a "good" time to try. If your running amd64 I can email you the missing plasmoids files (or you can use the Debian svn and build them yourself.) They exist naturally in the repos for i386. |

Of course, you might want to get it sooner. looks like rc2 is about to be out

i tried going through and installing all of the packages individually, but ended up with circular dependencies.
both apt-get install kde4-minimal && apt-get install kde4-minimal -t experimental yield the same errors.
is there a "hard way" to do this, or am i just going to have to wait for something? if that is the case, what exactly is it that i'm waiting for? |

Worked for me. I don't remember the required packages, but trail&error worked after a few tries and kde4.1 now runs without problems.

some of the packages are already in sid. Unless I forget it I'll post my working /etc/apt/preferences when I get home tonight (CEST). Most of the stuff is at 4.0.98, with e.g. kdelibs5 already at some newer cvs revision (fixing the "kde4 stalls at login when using the binary nvidia driver", at least for nVidia 169.<whatever_is_in_smxi_right_now>).

| Recently when I tried to install kde4 using apt-get it was a mess, using aptitude to install kde4 worked without a hitch. This is on debian sid not sidux though so YMMV. |

(correct me if I am wrong)
apttitude tries to install Recommended packages by defaut, apt-get doesn't do it by defaut.
(both can be configured to do otherwise)
in your case, probably some recommended packages were necessary to work as you have
expected, thus apt-get was a mess, but apptitude without a hitch.
But it doesn't mean sidux users should use aptitude. Contorary, sometimes the default behavour
of aptitude may read to catastrophe on sid, so sidux recommends (demands) you tu use
apt-get dist-upgrade. |

| This issue has nothing to do with recommends, the real issue that parts of kde4 4.1 are in experimental and parts (the development system and libraries) in sid, combined with NEW processing for some part of KDE 4.0.85, which now required very cautious pinning to succeed (but it does work with plain apt as well). |

I don't think an apt-get dist-upgrade would help you much with install KDE 4 which was the point of MeanDean's post. |
