Hi,
I tried to install sidux Nyx on a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop all weekend and I still haven't done it.
The trouble is at the stage where the files are copied to the hard disk- it never goes beyond that stage (I've got about 13 hours of futile attempts to prove it).
I tried to install another distro (Puppy Linux) just to troubleshoot and found out it wouldn't boot, until I changed the flag of the NTFS partition (contains Windows Vista) from bootable to non-bootable. Yet Nyx would still not install.
What could be the matter, please? |

congra! you can now say goodbye to vista.
about sidux, first check the download and cd, and burn DAO mode.
... and now you don't have reason to install Nyx, there is newer version sidud Erebos.

first fix your vista installation (assuming you do want it). use your system repair disk from Dell or, if necessary, boot into the emergency repair partition if you have one (my dell workstation does, but I don't know about a vostro laptop).
then download and burn a fresh copy of sidux using DAO mode.
then confirm that the disk is OK by booting up as a LiveCD and playing around a bit.
finally, try installing sidux again. |

please confirm that the iso file and the cd are not faulty:
md5sum check of the iso file and also as a cheatcode in grub when booting live cd |

Hi,
I found out what the trouble really is: the sata hard disk was set to AHCI mode. Now I don't know what AHCI means, but boy did it cost me a lot of pain!
From the BIOS setup I changed the hard disk mode to ATA, got my nyx kde-lite cd and it installed in 5 minutes!  !
Now, since sidux is supposed to be cutting edge and all that, I'd like to know why it couldn't cope with a hard disk in AHCI mode, but I guess I'll leave that for another thread...

hmm... Vostros are Santa-Rosa platform, IIRc.
And if i remember correctly, there was quite some trouble with this chipset especially in terms of AHCI. Seems Intel changed something.
I guess XP would have similar install-trouble when BIOS is set to AHCI Mode.
Do not know if the Chipset-Support got better in the Kernel in the meantime...
On my i945 - chipset (Napa-Platform, predecessor of Santa Rosa) AHCI works with sidux.
So i guess this AHCI-Mode is generally a Problem.

and for your Vista, if you still have it: windows needs the bootflag, put it back (with fdisk e.g.) and it should boot

Strange!
I think this must be a BIOS-specific issue. On my Intel mainboard, I have 4 SATA hdds, all set to AHCI mode in BIOS, and I've never seen a problem with sidux or any other Linux. |
