The author brings up a good point, why are we so fragmented?
Because due to the nature of linux + oss, it's easy
and
Because everyone thinks they're right.
All the top dogs have different infrastructure to build their distributions. Ubuntu is frozen, sidux is rolling. Fedora + Red Hat think rpm's are superior and future proof (otherwise they would have changed?), but they also promote a sense of minimalism while, although opensuse is rpm too, they like the completely unique control panel approach that configures everything.... not minimalist. (sorry for the general take on opensuse, i don't really like it!)
Each distribution brings their own sets of characteristics that attract different personalities and habits. We could all merge to one distribution but the feedback would strike a revolt and the linux market will fragment again. |

It is also strange that he asks every body to concentrate the efforts for Ubuntu and not for Debian itself.
More importantly the article is unable to give examples of any other distro which is compatible with debian sid and still provides stability. In the main stream distros I will never put Ubuntu as it is also derived from debian. |

| Trolling for page hits would be my guess... notice he doesn't actually install and review sidux, he just picks an "unfortunate name" out of a hat (some rival's blog). Not exactly an original take on the distro scene, either. Presumably he still submitted an invoice... |

Some ppl. complain at all the lost development time in all the distributions.
But is it better to waste time complaining about what other ppl. think is right or wrong?
Linux is about freedom. Everyone can do what he wants with it.
As Opinions differ, its the logical consequence, that there must be many different projects of many ppl.
But as we are Open Source, all can profit from the work.
A Certain commercial OS lives from the point that much work is (nearly exclusively) concentrated on this platform.
Which is great for progress, but do we all profit from it!?
We many not use all of the work done on it. Improvements etc.
We are not even allowed to make small changes to make it fit our needs!
so i guess such trolls should stop complaining, enjoy freedom of the FOSS world, and do something useful with their time!

Why should closed source be great for progress, specially compared to open source? I definitely do not understand that point of yours.
Closed source is great for ....., the company's share holders. And even that is true in short terms only. Looking at a long term investment I would definitely avoid closed source software businesses.

I agree with dsmithhfx's conclusion...this was a trolling for page hit article. Article had no substance, no fact checking, was mean spirited (unfortunate name?) and was written (it seems) just to stir the wrath of ALL Linux enthusiasts.
Question is, who accepted his short stupid rant to be published in C/Net?
Conspiracy Theory: Shuttleworth is paying trolls to advance his corporate strategy. If all of Debian would roll over, and do nothing but, try to improve his "average-stable" distro.....hmmmm.
Edit: I just read that he had only 20 comments. I guess for Matt Asay, it was epic fail. |

Well, he did spell the name right, he emphasized the name and he got the right quote when describing sidux, all before the "read more" link. That's pretty good imho.
Further I'd like to congratulate Matt Asay if he can make a decent living out of writing these kinds of blogposts. Publishing opinions on other blogposts without too much research or knowledge seems like easy money to me. |

Even better when someone else pays for it.
There are enough folks out there who will read that post and think, that can't be true.
They will then check it out for themselves and find the truth.
