I've played around with KDE4 in live CDs and opensuse 11 and I hate it. Seems like too many configuration options are stripped out. I feel like I'm in a dumbed down version of Gnome. Hopefully Debian will delay releasing Lenny as stable for a looooooong time after the projected release date this fall (as is its custom for releases) so KDE4 isn't foisted on us until it has matured a bit.
Think I'll wait another couple of weeks before I DU. |

I du'd last night after waiting about a week. Saw all the kdebase upgrades, kde4 libs etc. coming in. DU completed without incident, and everything seems to be working ok.
Buy the way, I'm a few days past my 1 year anniversary with sidux. I now have 5 boxes hooked up to my home network, always fully upgraded, and I've never had a system go down. Pretty good for someone who started out as a newb (maybe now an advanced newb). Thanks everyone. |

For those who are still interested...
Kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4 is supposed to contain the same files as
kdebase-bin-kde3 so the transition from one to the other should be
seamless. But something is different when it comes to kde configuration
because I've just discovered that my wife had no problems at all when
she accessed her own account on the same machine. I'd shutdown the
the machine with kde screwed up hoping to attend to it later. While
I was out of the house she booted up and did what she had to do without
experiencing any problems.
So it's my kde config that causes my problems. The only significant
difference between our two kde configs is that I have transparency
turned on while she doesn't.
I haven't got time to figure out what exactly goes wrong aand file a
bug report so I'm going to wait for the next update of the transitional
kde4 stuff |

rangolo:
Can you select a background but it won't survive a logout/login?
If so this might help.
Go to Control Centre->KDE Components->Session Manager-> On Login.
Is it set to restore previous session? If it is then select
a new backgroundchange and set the above to Restore manually save
session. |

On a test partition early this morning I installed and immediately dist-upgraded (using smxi) with no issues at all. System remains very fast. Running 2.6.25.slh.1-sidux-686 here with the NVIDIA 173.14.09 version video driver.
I did have an issue with the installer and using Ext3. sidux wouldn't boot using a GRUB that was already installed. (it booted fine when its own GRUB was installed to the MBR) But switching to Reiserfs fixed that.
I continue to wonder about UTC and New York being the only choices available in the installer. Clicking on the button to change the default New York will only allow UTC as the change. Then you can't change it until after install. Is this a known bug? I haven't kept up as I should lately.
Also didn't want to configure the monitor resolution correctly. At least not OOTB.
Also I have to mention the aberration of wanting to change all the time stamps on all partitions (including ones with operating systems) without asking. Or is this a 'feature'.
Very nice system though! For Sid it's a superb implementation. Thank you to all the devs that work so hard on sidux.
PS: I didn't know there was a time limit on membership on this forum....Mine was lost or turned off without notice. I did have to change email addresses recently. But that shouldn't effect the membership date of joining. |

I fixed my slowness problem with Kde.
I installed the Erebus Xfce option.
Xfce 4.4.2 is extremely improved since Xfce 4.0.0
Imagine that Kde 4.4 will be similar compared to Kde 4.0.
So far, I have been able to configure what I need or want in Xfce.
And it is faster. Subjectively. On a laptop w/ Celeron M 1.73 with 1GB.
Gnome 2.22 is also much improved and usable. Lots of good choices. |

rangalo: all I can suggest is that you check the permissions of /.kderc
in your home directory. Make sure the user can change .kderc.
I presume you mean you can't change the background colour or did
you mean change a background image?
As you are using KDE as a fallback desktop have you installed all the
required the KDE files to get a fully functioning desktop? |

Hi,
I think I have serious problems with KDE . The background problem was the one which was very obvious moreover, I cannot see the run menu in kde (Alt + F2) , I don't have the right-click menu on the desktop and my konsole is completely transparent ... Do I miss some kde package ? what do you suggest ? I don't want to make a complete reinstall of sidux ..
thanks & regards,
Hardik |

Hi, Rangalo,
I've had the same problem on a non-essential system on which I run sidux dangerously. There I have committed the sin of dist-upgrading (from "experimental" no less) using aptitude. Occasionally, I'll have that same problem with a black background, no taskbars or menus (other than right-clicking) available to me from within KDE, etc.
(That laptop also has an oldish ATI graphics board in it, so YMMV.)
The only way I can consistently get things to work is to delete my user's ~/.kde4 directory, and let it be rebuilt upon next login.
I hope you get your problem figured out! If I want to do any work requiring a window manager on that computer I have to use E17 or XFCE4 (neither of which I mind). |

The opposite: yesterday's DU did not remove kdebase-bin-kde3, so apparently I don't need kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4. Is there a reason to install it nevertheless?
Code:
root@siduxbox:~# apt-get -s install kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4
